JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for the effective laundering of detainee clothing, linens, towels, etc., and performance of custodial duties within the Juvenile Detention Facility.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Operates laundry equipment to wash the clothing, linen, towels, etc. used in the Juvenile Detention Facility.
- Maintains the inventory of laundry supplies.
- Ensures the maintenance of laundry equipment; requisitions repairs as necessary.
- Maintains accurate records of laundry operation as required.
- Monitors condition of detainees’ clothing and linens; replaces as necessary.
- Assigns the pick-up of soiled clothing and linen and delivery of clean items.
- Determines detainees’ work schedules; ensures the effective performance of assigned duties.
- Instructs personnel in the proper laundry procedures and use of equipment.
- Maintains the security of the laundry area; monitors issuance of keys to this area.
- Ensures the safe storage of laundry, cleaning supplies, and chemicals.
- Oversees the sweeping, mopping, and scrubbing of floors in the common areas.
- Ensures the cleaning and disinfection of bathrooms in common areas.
- Cleans windows, walls, and doors in the common areas.
- Cleans the staff break room, staff locker room, and other common areas as needed.
- Cleans, dusts, and polishes furniture and fixtures as needed.
- Cleans and polishes the elevator located within the detention area.
- Removes trash from offices and classrooms.
- Drives vehicle to purchase cleaning supplies, attend job-related training, or do other occasional errands as needed.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs other related duties as required.
PERSONNEL SUPERVISED: Provides supervision to three to five detainees in the performance of laundry and custodial duties.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in a smoking-restricted indoor environment with the use of inmate labor to perform duties. The position requires exposure to chemicals in cleaning and laundry products. Occasional transporting of youth to other facilities is required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

- Considerable knowledge of the procedures, supplies, and techniques of professional laundering of clothing, towels, and linens.
- Considerable knowledge of the operational procedures and maintenance requirements of industrial laundry equipment.
- Good knowledge of cleaning methods and procedures and related safety practices.
- Good knowledge of storage requirements and procedures for use of cleaning materials and chemicals.
- Ability to maintain detailed records.
- Ability to assign and supervise the work of inmate labor.
- Ability to use industrial laundry equipment.
- Ability to attend work regularly and reliably.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

- Ability to push and pull a loaded laundry cart weighing 40 pounds.
- Ability to vertically lift 40 pounds from the floor to the waist and carry 10 feet.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally.
- Visual acuity is needed to effectively detect linen and clothing wear and determine replacement needs.
- Ability to bend and stoop as needed for scouring and cleaning.
- Ability to step up and down on a 16-inch step.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner.
- Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
- Ability to concentrate for long periods of time.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Completion of high school or GED equivalency including training in commercial laundering and/or janitorial practices; considerable experience with the laundering of clothing or linen; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
