JOB SUMMARY
The Animal Care Manager shall be responsible for the Animal Care Division and Animal Care Technicians. The Animal Care Manager reports directly to the Chief of Animal Services, and is responsible for overseeing the welfare of animals under the care of the Animal Services Department. This may include feeding, watering, grooming, exercising, enrichments and other duties necessary for the overall well being of the animals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Animal Care:
Supervises the Animal Care Technicians.
Ensures the Animal Care Technicians are following the proper procedures for the care and welfare of the animals.
Oversees enrichment program for all shelter animals.
Performs behavioral assessment in accordance with departmental procedures on all new dogs before being placed for adoption.
Works in collaboration with the Adoption Division in placing animals on the adoption floor.
Performs daily rounds to address any medical or behavioral concerns in a timely manner.
Educates and trains all animal care staff in cleaning and proper sanitation practices.
Assists in animal intakes.
Assists in medicating all animals.
Assists Shelter Veterinarian with animals requiring surgery.
Responsible for ordering shelter supplies, food medications and equipment.

Facility and Maintenance:
Oversees custodial care of the facility.
Maintains an inventory of all shelter supplies for cleaning and medical needs.
Ensures air filters are replaced monthly as required by the Department standards.
Addresses any structural concerns to the Chief of Animal Services.

Operations:
Communicates with Chief of Animal Services about all animal care, facility or staff needs.
Assists in strategic planning and budget development for the Animal Care Division.
Assists in all staff meetings.
Assists in staff evaluations for Animal Care Technicians.
Assists in hiring process for Animal Care Technicians
Oversees and creates Animal Care Technician Schedules.

Supervisor Responsibilities:
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the County"s policies and applicable laws; responsibilities may include interviewing, recommending and selecting candidates for employment; training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising employee performance; counseling, rewarding and disciplines employees; investigating employee grievances; approving and mediating disciplinary action; and addressing and resolving complaints. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Animal Care Manager -
High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience in Petpoint, preferred
2 years of experience in Shelter Medicine & Sanitation, required
2 years of experience in animal sheltering, required
2 years of managerial or supervisory experience, required

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Possession of a Class C Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator"s License (or the equivalent from another issuing state) or the ability to obtain such a license within thirty (30) days of appointment to position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to lift to 50 lbs.
This position requires you to stand for long periods of time

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Exposure to loud working environment (barking dogs in dog kennels)
Exposed to zoonosis diseases (Ringworm, Rabies, Intestinal parasites)
Exposure to fractious and aggressive animals
May work outdoors in varying weather to include heat, cold and wet conditions

. GENERAL INFORMATION
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of management fundamentals, strong customer services skills, and leadership skills to maintain a functioning Animal Care Division. Computer knowledge and organizational skills are also necessary. The ability to work adeptly with a variety of animals is required.
