Reports To:  Superintendent / Project Manager  

Summary of the Job: To efficiently and safely operate a backhoe/mini excavator/skid steer to dig trenches, scratch outs, move spoils and move aggregate for the installation of building sewer trunk lines, horizontal branches, and water lines/mains. Understand and have knowledge of proper usage of a backhoe, skid steer, mini-excavator, and telehandler. 

  • Duties - Essential Functions:
    • Basic level blueprint/plot plan reading.
    • Proper and efficient operating of backhoe & skid steer to back fill and dig trenches and scratch outs.
    • Proper and efficient operating of a Mini Excavator.
    • Proper and efficient operating of a Telehandler.
    • Knowledgeable and familiar with the use of ditch & sump pumps for dewatering.
    • Knowledge of and efficiency of locating utilities and understand the process to call in for locates prior to digging or trenching.
    • Ability to glue or slip fit sanitary/storm pipe & fittings and install water service piping by glue or mechanical fittings.
    • Follows directions and specifically follows all trench safety directions.
    • Clear understanding of OSHA regulations regarding shoring and trenching and general construction.
  • Responsibilities:
    • Leadership: Provide direction and light supervision of others, responsible for training of assigned labor. In addition, provide direction and feedback of assigned tasks.
    • Direction: Receive guidance with respect to general objectives; in the majority of tasks and projects assigned determine methods, work sequence, scheduling and how to achieve objectives of assignments; operate within specific policy guidelines.
    • Safety: Comply with all safety policies, practices, required certification or licensing, and procedures while operating all necessary heavy equipment. 
    • Report: Communicate all unsafe activities to Field Superintendent and/or Department Manager.
    • Teamwork: Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve job site, departmental, and company goals.
  • Education:
    • Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
    • Licenses: Must hold and maintain a valid Driver’s License in good standing  
  • Experience:  Minimum of 2-3 years of experience operating a backhoe, mini-excavator and skid steer.
  •   Necessary Skills:
    • Work Ethic: Demonstrated solid work ethic.
    • Attendance: Consistent attendance and arriving at required start times.
    • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Necessary Skills Continued:
    • Math Skills: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and divide/multiply with 10’s and 100’s.
    • Reasoning Skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
    • Computer Operations: No experience necessary.
    • Planning and Organization: Must be able to handle multiple tasks and/or projects simultaneously.  Ability to organize tasks and/or projects, in addition the capability to delegate assignments.

  •  Physical/Environmental Demands:
    • Working conditions: Will be exposed to changing weather conditions, for instance; rain, snow, wind, cold, and heat.
    • Work Environment: Must be comfortable working in the following environments: outdoor weather conditions, very loud, wet or humid conditions, working near mechanical parts, working in awkward and/or confining workspaces, possible inhalation of fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock and vibrations.

  • Physical/Environmental Demands Continued:
    • Work Schedule:  Out of Town: Standard start time 7:00 A.M. End time may vary depending on project needs. Standard work week; Monday through Friday. Occasional Saturday work may be required. Periodic overtime and meetings may occur outside of project completion. Depending on the state you are traveling to perform your job/work, a two-week duration out of town may be required to maintain schedule.
    • In Town: Standard hours 7:00 A.M.–3:30 P.M.; Can vary depending on task(s). Standard work week; Monday through Friday. Occasional Saturday work may be required. Periodic overtime and meetings may occur outside of project completion
    • Travel: Ability to travel to out-of-town projects preferred, but not required.
    • Physical Requirements:
      • Must be able to do the following activities at least 2/3 of workday: Stand, walk, use hands or fingers, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk and hear.  
      • Must be able to climb or balance for at least 1/3 of your workday. Capable of lifting at least 75 pounds. Can continuously lift 10 pounds or more for over 2/3 of workday. Constant lifting or carrying of items, when required.
      • Capable of moderate physical activity.
      • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, work with the fingers and perceive attributes of objects and materials.
