A Research Assistant position is available in the Division of Physiologic Imaging in the Department of Radiology at the University of Iowa. The position supports a broad research program in the Sieren Laboratory, with focus on computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) acquisition, image processing and artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The person is expected to support multiple research projects through the collection of data, analysis, and scientific development of the projects.
Position Responsibilities:
1. Conduct data management tasks for the organization and curation of CT/MRI datasets.
2. Computer programming to perform image processing and statistical assessments of existing image datasets.
3. Conduct CT/MRI experiments involving human subjects, and/or preclinical models.
4. Assist in the scheduling research studies and recruitment of research subjects.
5. Facilitate completion of informed consents, visit procedures and paperwork associated with participants.
6. Describe study purpose and procedures to participants, ensure that participants understand expectations.
7. Interpret and summarize data for report.
8. Maintain ongoing communication with leadership regarding research activities.
Research
Perform research activities in a specialized area. Research literature as requested. Adapt and perform image processing and AI tasks. Critically review literature for the purposes of furthering the research and developing new hypotheses in conjunction with other investigators.
Experiments, Investigations, Evaluations
Perform basic and complex procedures and techniques as outlined in research protocol, assure fidelity to protocols, may propose modifications to protocols and/or assist in the design of research protocols. Execute portions of research plan. Monitor and maintain validity and integrity of research data. Apply new methods/theories.
Collect, Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts, Publications
Construct computer programs and interface with existing software to analyze image data. Perform statistical analysis. Assist in preparing publications and presentations. Contribute to the technical writing of papers, manuscripts, grant applications and published materials as evidenced by documented recognition. Present results/findings at team and departmental meetings; may present at local and national meetings.
Administrative and Project Management
Make recommendations regarding the validity of research subjects and data. Submit routine IRB, ACURF or similar protocol submissions, if applicable.
Supervision/Staffing
Assist with providing, training, direction, assignments, and feedback to undergraduate research assistants. Collaborate with graduate and post graduate students.

May perform functional supervision of student lab members.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
1. Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Proficiency with computer programming (Python, Matlab, and R).
3. Proficiency with statistical analyzes (R).
4. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Teams) and Endnote.
5. Proficiency with online databases (Redcap)
6. Experience analyzing CT and/or MRI data (DICOM, Niifti)
7. Ability to do independent online library searches.
8. Previous scientific writing, including manuscript preparation/co-authorship.
9. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
10. Experience with self-motivation and working independently.
11. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
12. Demonstrated ability for successful teamwork.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
1. 2 years research experience with a medical imaging/image processing focus.
2. Experience with image processing libraries (SimpleITK).
3. Experience with IDEs (Jupyter/Jupyter Notebooks).
4. Experience with AI/machine learning models (neural networks) and ability to implement with commonly used AI research libraries (Keras, TensorFlow/PyTorch)
5. Software management/repository skills (Github)
6. Experience with preclinical/large animal studies.
7. Knowledge of IACUC/IRB processes.
8. Experience with electronic patient record (EPIC)
9. Knowledge of University of Iowa Policies and Procedures.
