What are the responsibilities and job description for the VP FP & A position at Radius Recycling?

This position operates within broad parameters and has responsibility for financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, ad-hoc analysis and tracking/reporting of performance of growth projects. This individual is responsible for consolidation of operational results and supporting the operations financial analysis requirements.  This role is also responsible for development and implementation of plans to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the various functions including recommending system and process improvements.  The VP Finance, FP&A also analyzes data for decision making by operational management and is involved in applying accounting principles to solve complex problems inside and outside established parameters.  The VP Finance, FP&A is responsible for the timely and accurate implementation of various functional policies, procedures and systems throughout SSI operations and to provide analytical support on major projects as needed by Management.  This will include review of proposals, ad-hoc high level analysis, development of reporting tools, assisting and guiding Financial Business Partners and Operations Analysts on operations analysis and other special projects.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide meaningful information to drive business improvements and identify business opportunities.
  • Manages the development of annual budgets, monthly forecasts, five-year planning and strategic plans.
  • Consolidate monthly forecasts and flash forecasts, ensuring proper reflection of intercompany transactions.
  • Develop projections of debt covenant ratios, net debt and cash flow.
  • Track monthly forecasts against outlook and analyst estimates.
  • Evaluate and interpret operating activities and results; make recommendations for improvement; supervise design of systems to improve control; direct special analysis projects.
  • Able to articulate complex financial and legal information to all levels of the organization to enable the best possible financial decisions and intended outcomes.
  • Drive the annual finance strategy process and preparation of presentation materials for the Board of Directors. Support the Company’s Strategy group in other facets of the long-term strategy process as necessary.
  • Challenges conventional thinking in order to obtain the most efficient solutions to issues, utilizing best practices, benchmarks and metrics to improve the organization.
  • Prepares and coordinates reports, ensuring the accurate and timely processing of transactions.
  • Responsible for the coordination of various functional changes and communications between operations, divisional executives and Corporate.
  • Interacting with senior management and external auditors as necessary.
  • Lead and support the implementation and development of financial and other information systems.
  • Assist with forecasting financial and operational results related to organic and inorganic growth and other strategic investment activities, including tracking against original investment plan and reporting on synergies.
  • Support the Company’s strategic planning and capital allocation activities.
  • Participate and/or lead other projects as required.

The ideal candidate has significant finance, accounting, strategy and related project management experience in the following areas: financial planning and forecasting, business investment cases, financial statements, accounting policy, revenue arrangements, internal control, preferably in industries comparable to Schnitzer Steel Industries. This person is an innovative and dynamic thinker with strong business acumen and able to function comfortably with a variety of stakeholders including subject matter experts. This individual possesses enhanced writing and presentation abilities including concise documentation and communication. The candidate provides leadership and mentoring to the finance team, ensuring an optimum level of performance in a positive work environment and broadening advancement opportunities for the team. Further, the candidate is able to develop strong interpersonal networks within the existing organization and with prospective organizations.

IDEAL EXPERIENCE and credentials

  • 15 years of finance, accounting, strategy and project management experience
  • Successful track record of leading and scaling in a global environment
    • Public company experience preferred
    • Commodities and/or manufacturing industry experience also preferred
  • Experience leading high-performing, multidisciplinary teams using expertise in the area of finance
    • CPA or MBA preferred
    • Utilizes proven project management tools and methods
    • Proven ability to influence internal business partners, lead change and accomplish goals through collaborative efforts, excellent team communication, and negotiation
  • Experience developing, implementing and manage the effectiveness of technology and information systems that impact finance functions.

Strong general business, strategy and finance knowledge

  • Strong business and financial acumen, with a continuous improvement mindset
  • Proven experience in development of monthly forecasts and annual budget processes
  • Deep understanding of organic and inorganic growth and profitability drivers
  • Experience developing, interpreting and analyzing business plans and financial models (financial and operational projections, (dis)synergies, discounted cash flow and other valuation techniques, etc.)
  • Possesses institutional knowledge on enterprise strategic planning platforms, tools, and metrics
