Job Summary:

 

The Training Director is a dual role that includes overseeing the 'health and wellness' of the Training Development team regarding personnel, product, and processes; and doing instructional design and producing training materials. The current need of the department determines the amount of time spent on each of these two roles. This position is responsible for supervising and supporting the success of team members, for ensuring the quality of the team’s product, and for monitoring and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of processes. 

 

In the instructional designer role, this position is responsible for design and development of learning experiences, both classroom and eLearning, for RailPros employees and customers (internal and external products). This person collaborates with subject matter experts and customers to assess developmental needs and identify suitable training solutions, then works with the team to produce and implement the solutions.

 

In the leadership role, this position must oversee the execution of the Department's strategies within the Development team. The Director must clearly communicate department goals, then set team and individual goals to align with department vision and use these goals to help guide member's decision-making. The Director is responsible for overseeing the design and development process for all training-centric products and services created by the team and ensuring products meet expectations in terms of quality, creativity, and innovation. This responsibility includes the promotion of and showcasing of our products. The Director must own and manage a long-term plan for identifying areas for process improvement to set the department up for successful growth.

 

Leadership responsibilities include, but are not limited to, hiring and personnel management; helping promote a company culture that encourages morale and performance; providing inspired leadership while encouraging creative thinking, forward-looking development and responsible product design and development; marketing and product promotion; managing quality assurance and quality control of all products; providing creative guidance and oversight for project design and department growth; budgeting for future equipment and overhead needs; and, driving non-project-based work that supports improvement and growth that align with department goals.

 

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

 

Personnel Management focused:

  • Direct supervision of internal Training and Media team employees and contractors, as needed
  • Support team member individual development
  • Hire, on-board and supervise team members
  • Identify and address problems and opportunities for the team
  • Scout, screen and approve team members' efforts in new ideas and technologies to advance our product offering
  • Provide inspired leadership for the team
  • Promote a culture of high moral and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality

 

Product Development focused:

  • Help ensure project priorities are communicated, team understands priorities and is making good decisions based on priorities
  • Work with product stakeholders to ensure scope, purpose and outcomes of project are clearly defined and agreed upon
  • Lead imaginative design discussions to develop creative messaging for successful internal and external communication and training pieces
  • Develop and execute strategies for showcasing department products and/or capabilities
  • Collaborate, as directed, across RailPros departments (internal) to provide training development in support of other department and corporate goals
  • Present creative work to internal stakeholders and represent RailPros visual design integrity at all stages of an engagement
  • Serve as a brand advocate, working to promote clear product objectives in support of quality and creativity
  • Monitor and guide creative vision for projects
  • Ensure that creative execution supports the creative brief, brand, and business strategy

 

Process focused:

  • Develop, implement, review, and improve operating procedures for continuity and compliance of product brand
  • Develop, implement, review, and improve operating procedures for efficient design and development of products

 

Instructional Design and Training Development Focused:

  • Apply adult learning principles and instructional design best practices to create engaging learning activities and compelling course content material/media (audio, video, simulations, games etc.)
  • Own the end-to-end design and development of learning content, including modes of assessment to measure the effectiveness and application of training
  • Design learning that reflects an understanding of the diversity of learning styles to ensure that learning solutions resonate with increasingly diverse audience
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to identify training needs/knowledge gaps
  • Suggest curriculum-based recommendations based on requirements analysis
  • State instructional end goals and create content to match
  • Help write Project Proposals, to include Project Scope, Design Plan, timelines, and budgets
  • Develop training deliverables/collateral in part or in full for multiple projects, including Training Design Documents, ILT Instructor Guides, Student Workbooks, Exams, presentations, eLearning storyboards, eLearning modules/programs, and surveys
  • Work with a team to create supporting material/media, including (audio, video, animations, simulations, role plays, games, etc.)
  • Provide exercises and activities that enhance the learning process
  • Decide on the criteria used to judge learner’s performance and develop assessment instruments
  • Maintain project documentation and course folders
  • Administers spending against the departmental/project budget
  • Conduct follow-up studies of all completed training to evaluate and measure results
  • Modify/revise programs as needed
  • Other duties as assigned or required to meet the business needs

Qualifications:


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Proven work experience as a manager
  • Must be comfortable working at both a strategic and tactical level
  • Knowledge of operations management
  • Familiarity with RailPros' operations and principles
  • Extensive knowledge of training development and/or media production processes
  • Proven team building and leadership skills
  • Comfortable with and ability to drive results through ambiguity and multiple/shifting priorities
  • Demonstrates excellence in communication and stakeholder management
  • Highly collaborative
  • Proven ability to impose structure and organization to the creative development process
  • Experience preparing and managing to a required budget, timeline, and project scope
  • Knowledge and understanding of adult learning theory and instructional design methodologies for classroom-based, self-guided, and virtual training
  • Experience working with e-learning development tools (Articulate, Captivate, etc.)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Partnering effectively with others to achieve results
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to proofread work of self, and others, to improve quality, consistency, and readability
  • Ability to write effective copy instructional text, audio scripts/video scripts
  • Highly proficient in time management, organization, planning and prioritization
  • Proficiency with electronic communications including e-mail and text as well as standard office applications (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite)

  

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in Training Development, Business Management, or related field
  • 7 years of relevant work experience
  • 5 years supervisory experience

 

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Railroad, or similar industry-related experience
  • Experience developing long-term strategies and planning

  

Additional Qualifications, Certifications, etc.:

  • Storyline 360 mastery (or similar)
  • HTML5 competency
  • Microsoft Office (including PowerPoint)
  • Experience in railroad or similar industry
  • Knowledge of a variety of multimedia training platforms and methods
  • Knowledge of a variety of course development software
