What are the responsibilities and job description for the Surveyor position at RECON?
RECON has successfully completed over 6,000 environmental remediation, geotechnical, mine reclamation, and decommissioning and demolitions projects since 1989. The Surveyor will collect information, conduct precise measurements, provide survey and layout support for construction projects using coordinate geometry and modern surveying equipment. This position reports to the Project Manager and provides daily survey support to the project management team. This is an on-site position located near Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Responsibilities
- Perform preliminary survey work necessary to prepare project plans and ensure proper compliance with specifications and the scope of the construction work.
- Collect data, conduct topographical ground survey work designed to establish baseline, elevation, boundaries, and other geodetic measurements.
- Interpret project plans and coordinate critical dimensions effectively for civil earthwork.
- Design, set and run the manual and robotic total station, effectively manage AutoCAD, TOPCON Office 3D and Trimble GPS equipment.
- Calculate height, depth, relative position, property lines, and other characteristics of terrain by trigonometry and/or other mathematical methods.
- Install construction staking to define cuts, fills and alignment for the equipment operators performing the dirt work
- Manage all documents and records related to the conflict and solutions pertaining to the completion of construction project work.
- Work closely with the project management team to develop and design solutions and alternatives when conflict arises in the field.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering; or a related discipline and at least 3 years of field survey operations experience with soil or earthwork construction projects
- Proficiency in Total Station, with ability to use dimensions from prints to calculate exact layout locations with GPS and robotics.
- Basic understanding of earthwork, soil sampling equipment, construction equipment, materials and techniques related to civil/environmental construction.
- Knowledge of general construction contract documents and drawings, the specifications and survey instruments needed to read and interpret blueprints, maintenance instructions, drawings and safety rules.
- Experience using data collectors, electronic and robotic total stations, digital levels, tripod, prisms, AutoCAD Civil 3D, TOPCON 3D office, and MS Office are needed to perform the duties of this position.
- Strong communication skills needed with an expertise in higher math skills, algebra, and trigonometry.
- Must be willing to work outside in a construction environment with potential exposure to dust, noise, toxic materials, waste and infectious materials, as well as inclement weather conditions.
