About Our Client
They're a fully-digital insurance company focused on small businesses. They develop their own unique insurance products from the ground up, and they combine that with software that automates the process to get covered and file claims. And they give business owners the tools they need to operate their business with less risk. As you can probably tell, they have a big goal and there is tons to do! :)
Their founding team has a track record in InsurTech and product development DNA, having most recently built a startup with 50 employees, serving the largest insurance companies in the world, and having raised over $39M in venture capital. You’ll be able to focus on the difficult task of building a world-class product based on market feedback from their customers and partners.
They want to build a world-class product and engineering culture in the Bay Area, and they’d like members of these teams to work in-person at least a few days per week. They trust that you’ll get your work done, the in-person is mostly about team building and culture.
About the Role
As an early Designer, you will be excited about working on product design as well as visual design. You are coming into a mostly blank canvas. They have partnered closely with an incredible branding and design agency to conceptualize the components of an iconic brand focused on small business owners. You will help extend and evolve that design starting point across web application designs for the technical product; web page design; sales collateral; presentation materials; and basically anything else that reflects their brand or IP in some way. Basically, you will bring these designs to life within their product.
You’ll work with an experienced leadership team that appreciates the importance of good design. You will need to plan a design strategy and they’d want you to collaborate with the rest of the product and engineering organization. Product, Design and Engineering culture is very important to them, and so they are intentionally building those teams in the Bay Area so that the team can meet in their San Francisco Financial District office, with the goal of sharing the benefit of face to face collaboration. They currently meet at the office 2 days per week, and work from home the rest of the time. They usually get dinner as a team on Monday nights, because otherwise Mondays really are always the worst.
What You’ll Do
- Prioritize constantly speaking with users.
- Deliver incredible products and experiences by combining a deep understanding of business strategy with creative design strategy.
- You'll ship frequently as they iterate on the product. There's a lot of stuff they need to build and figure out. They're also probably not going to get features right the first time, so they're going to need to iterate quickly.
- Leverage data and customer feedback to constantly iterate and evolve the design system.
- Contribute to the vision, strategy, and processes that allows them to grow the design function at various stages of their growth.
What You Need
- 5 years of design experience at an early-stage startup (Series A - Series C)
- Very comfortable doing heavily iterative product design work in Figma, and collaborating with the front end engineers to make sure everything looks exactly as you’d intended.
- Enjoy designing everything from an email template, to a login screen, to a website home page, to a physical item, and more.
- Generally comfortable moving very fast and working directly with engineering, product, and management
- Experience collaborating with a team that is building products from ideation to launch
- Propensity for making data-driven design decisions
- Experience evaluating design decisions and prioritization trade-offs
- Bonus points if you have experience with Webflow, Klaviyo, Sketch and PowerPoint/Keynote design.
