What are the responsibilities and job description for the Gear Editor, Field & Stream position at Recurrent Ventures?
The Opportunity
Field & Stream is looking for a full-time Gear Editor to oversee our commerce coverage. The Gear Editor will spend their time assigning and editing product roundups, reviews, and deals posts. The ideal candidate is someone who is up to speed on the latest and greatest gear, but is also familiar with classic, time-tested gear that outdoorsmen and -women still use today.
The Gear Editor will work with our internal SEO and analytics teams and build a network of external experts and in-house writers to elevate our product coverage. You’ll work to build our library of thorough, well-researched stories to help readers make smart decisions with their money. You’ll work on a broad range of outdoor topics, including hunting, fishing, camping, backpacking, hiking, survival, kayaking, and more. The ideal candidate should have knowledge of conversion funnels and creating content that makes the user take action. The candidate should have a strong eye for best-in-class review and recommendation content that elevates our brands and builds trust and authority in the commerce space.
The Gear Editor will manage the F&S Commerce Team and will report to the Editor-in-Chief. Field & Stream is part of Recurrent Ventures, a virtual-first company with offices in New York, Miami, and San Francisco.
The Responsibilities
- Assign and edit product roundups and product reviews for a search-focused audience
- Work closely with the SEO and Recurrent affiliate teams to make sure stories are created with best publishing practices
- Own story production from assignment to publish to ensure every piece stays on deadline and follows commerce blueprints
- Track content performance using GA and GSC and use that data to inform future article ideas
- Recruit top-notch writing talent/subject-matter experts in a variety of fields
- Keep content up-to-date and fresh by regularly updating roundups with new products and/or content suggestions from SEO
- Have a critical eye for recognizing pseudoscience, greenwashing, and separating marketing claims and facts
- Knowledge of industry publications to use as researching for changes that affect products and advice in our coverage
- Assist with big retail event coverage (Black Friday, Cyber Monday)
The Person
- 2 to 4 years experience editing or writing commerce content
- Experience assigning and editing stories from freelance contributors and ability to find subject matter experts
- Excellent editing and writing skills with a strong attention to detail and a focus on what will help the article get to page 1 on Google
- You understand the importance of EAT, building trust with Google (you should have an opinion on the latest product algorithm update) and readers, and what is needed to do both
- You’re familiar with using data to drive content creation and strategy (i.e. search volume stats, article sessions, etc.)
- Experience with SEO optimization (i.e. you know exactly where the keywords should be placed in the Meta Title, Meta Description, and introductions, etc.), as well as affiliate programs (you’re very familiar with drawing insights from Amazon data or work in programs akin to Skimlinks), and content analytics dashboards.
- Experience using SEO tools such as Ahrefs and Semrush
- You’re a team player and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
