SALARY: $16.00 - $19.00, Plus Benefits
SUPERVISOR(S): Public Works Division Administrator & Maintenance Supervisor
THIS IS A REGULAR FULL-TIME NON-EXEMPT POSITION
JOB SUMMARY: The Maintenance Worker position performs a variety of custodial/janitorial and maintenance tasks, including cleaning, repairs, and landscaping, to ensure the upkeep of tribal buildings, grounds, and equipment. Maintenance workers' assigned work locations are at the discretion of the supervisors and may vary based on departmental needs and/or employee suitability.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work as part of the Facilities Maintenance team, following direction and contributing to a positive work environment. The maintenance worker will be expected to collaborate with other team members to complete tasks efficiently and effectively, share knowledge and expertise, and support a positive and productive workplace culture.
- Assist in maintaining all aspects of tribal properties, including grounds, sidewalks, parking lots, common areas, interior and exterior of buildings, and all department equipment.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs, such as caulking, minor electrical repairs (e.g., replacing switches, fuses), unplugging sinks and toilets, faucet repair and replacement, wall preparation/patching, painting, and appliance repair.
- Assist with electrical, heating, and plumbing repairs, including replacing light fixtures, receptacles, troubleshooting HVAC issues, and replacing sink traps and drains.
- Report any physical breakdowns, damage, repairs, or liabilities related to facilities maintenance to the Supervisor. Document and respond to work orders as assigned.
- Maintain grounds throughout seasonal changes, including lawn care, landscaping, and snow/ice removal.
- Utilize communications equipment (e.g., tablets, cell phones) for efficient maintenance operations. Equipment must be turned on while on-duty or on-call.
- Assist with inspections, including annual, heating & mechanical, buildings & grounds, and preventative maintenance inspections.
- Be available for scheduled maintenance work and on-call outside of normal working hours.
- Perform physically demanding outdoor work in all weather conditions.
- Adhere to all safety rules and regulations.
- Eligible maintenance workers may receive cross-training to support the water and sewer department. This training will involve tasks such as pipe repair, meter reading, and water quality testing. This cross-training will help ensure that the Public Works Division has adequate staffing to handle emergencies and workload fluctuations, while also providing maintenance workers with valuable new skills and career development opportunities.

KNOWLEDGE: A maintenance worker typically needs a foundation of knowledge in basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, and general building maintenance and safety to effectively perform their duties.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School graduate or GED required.
- At least one year of experience in building maintenance, construction, plumbing, or electrical work is strongly preferred but not required.
- The successful candidate must be willing and able to obtain additional training or education as needed to stay up-to-date on industry best practices and develop their skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential.
- Must be able to work independently, organize workload, and manage time effectively.
- Must possess strong judgment, interpersonal skills, and the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
- Must possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license, vehicle, and appropriate vehicle coverage. Eligibility for inclusion in the Tribe's vehicle insurance policy is required. The maintenance worker will be required to drive for work purposes, which may include local driving and occasional long-distance travel.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Supervisors, Public Works staff, other tribal departmental staff, and community members.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The Maintenance Worker must have the ability to do physical manual labor, such as shoveling, mowing, painting, and cleaning, that would require bending, twisting, reaching, climbing, and lifting at least 50 pounds. Physical fitness is essential for performing these tasks effectively and safely.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Red Cliff Tribal Buildings. Both indoors and outdoors, with ground maintenance tasks including winter snow removal and ice control. All Tribal Buildings are smoke free.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: The Maintenance Worker will be required to travel locally to obtain parts, travel to and from work sites, and occasionally attend meetings and/or trainings both locally and nationally, which may involve overnight stays.

The manner in which the employee relates to fellow employees, customers and visitors is considered parallel in importance to technical knowledge and ability. Respect and consideration given to the dignity of each customer, visitor and fellow employee is a requisite of successful job performance. Any behavior or attitude that tarnishes the name or image of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa will be subject to immediate disciplinary action up to and including termination.
