What are the responsibilities and job description for the Principal UX, Navigation position at REI?
In this role, you will drive a wide range of design activities across our product areas resulting in exceptional experiences that are highly valued by our customers and drive business results. Often working with non-designers, you are educating and advocating for the practice of human-centered design, customer centricity, and product led strategies. You will be expected to utilize your full range of product design, interaction design, and visual design skills in this role. Candidates must be proactive, responsive, flexible, and able to succeed in a fast-paced, transforming, collaborative environment without supervision.
Job Responsibilities
- Drive strategic direction, establish shared vision across the company by obtaining buy-in on critical priorities leading to product execution.
- Partner with teams to deeply understand the REI ecosystem and define and analyze metrics that evaluate our trajectory and inform the success of our products.
- Understand REI’s strategic and competitive position and deliver experiences that are recognized best in the industry.
- Craft artifacts that communicate solutions. Including implementation of prototypes, mockups, task analysis, usability studies, personas, user flows, wireframes, style guides, navigational structures, and affinity diagrams.
- Identifies and leads building out design standards and patterns, style guides, and frameworks for our design systems.
- Champions user research; leads both generative & evaluative UX research.
- Provide mentorship and coaching to grow team.
- Evangelizes design best practices while uncovering novel and unexpected solutions.
- Foster REI’s culture, values and principles while setting new standards in executional and operational excellence.

Minimum Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
REI Essentials
- 6 years experience as a UX designer, interaction designer, information architect, service designer or similar.
- Proficient at building and shipping features/products that encompass an end-to-end experience across a variety of platforms.
- Experience leading product direction and strategic thinking.
- Deep understanding of design and prototyping tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe CX, etc.
- Adept at utilizing design systems, best practices, accessibility guidelines, and human-centered design methodologies.
- Previous experience supporting retail industry or e-commerce apps and sites.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- A portfolio demonstrating excellent UX design skills for solving complex problems with clear results.
- Bachelor’s degree in Design, HCI, Interaction or similar area, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in Informatics, Library Science, Information Management, or a related field
- Ability to plan and conduct user research and data to build a strategic point of view.
- Experience in managing vendors.
- Ability to lead design teams while maintaining responsibilities as an individual contributor.
