Position: Adjunct Instructor, Relay Online Offerings
Type: Part-Time (30-40 hours/month) from June 2022 - July 2022

Content Area Focus: Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Learners (ELL-301, -302, and -303)
If you love coaching teachers, leading professional development, working on a team of experienced high-performing educators, learning and working with new technology, and are hungry to further build your instructional leadership skill set on a part-time basis, the Adjunct Instructor role is right for you. In this role, you’ll be able to build relationships with graduate students and adapt our curriculum to meet their needs. Your responsibilities will be challenging and diverse.
During the summer term, you can expect to do things like teach graduate students via video conference, collaborate with full-time faculty to prepare classes, give feedback on graduate student performance, and correspond over email and telephone to support graduate students that need support
As a result of this effort, you’ll benefit from seeing teachers that you’ve worked with during the term as people and professionals. Plus, you’ll maximize your community impact by supporting teachers in generating significant, measurable student achievement gains in their K-12 classrooms.
To grow your own skills as a teacher coach and leader of adults, you will have the opportunity to participate in team professional development and individualized coaching. This is a great opportunity for veteran teachers and/or school leaders who are looking to gain additional experience leading adult learners.
WHAT YOU’LL TACKLE
AY22-23 Adjunct Responsibilities & Expectations
Preparation & Instruction
- Review pre-class preparation communication in a timely manner and complete necessary action steps
- Prepare for (for example, complete online pre-work, modify provided session plans, prepare materials) and teach two four-day summer intensive courses to a group of graduate students (June 21 - 24 and July 11 - 14)
- Share synchronous session materials after class sessions (e.g., organize self-paced Nearpod, class recording links, and materials on Canvas or via email)
- Communicate with students regarding progress on synchronous course requirements via Canvas or email (e.g. answer questions, address gaps in attendance)
Student Assessment & Support
- Participate in score norming activities with your lead professor and/or course leads ahead of all minor and major assessments
- Score graduate students’ assessments within two weeks of the assessment due date and ensure that all scores and comments are recorded on Canvas
- Communicate with course leads and students on missing/incomplete student assessments on due dates to ensure timely communication to graduate student and advisors; update due dates on Canvas based on extensions provided
- Manage student communication and follow-up with resubmissions
- Grade resubmissions
- Hold regular office hours around assessment deadlines and resubmissions
- Ongoing additional student support with those in unique circumstances
Professional Development
- Participate in instructional cycle processes to review the curriculum and learn effective and engaging techniques developed by Relay’s instructional leaders
- Debrief instructional strengths and growth areas from session observations with Relay leaders
Institutional Feedback
- Share all resources used in sessions and provide feedback on curriculum
- Perform other duties as assigned
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
First and foremost, the Adjunct Instructor, Relay Online Offerings must share the team’s sense of urgency about the need to improve student achievement through phenomenal teacher training. Additionally, candidates for the position must have the following:
- A master’s degree or doctoral degree
- At least five years of experience teaching in a school serving a high-needs community with demonstrated K-12 student achievement
- Ability to commit approximately 20-25 hours per month to the role from June 2022 through August 2022
- Demonstrated use of innovative technology in past roles; comfort with virtual teaching and relationship-building; design and/or teaching experience with online coursework highly preferred
- Ability to work efficiently, intensely, and within an entrepreneurial environment
- Ability to develop strong relationships and community in an online setting
- A demonstrated passion for urban education and closing the opportunity gap
- A demonstrated passion for working specifically with multilingual learners and families

COMPENSATION
Relay’s compensation philosophy is to pay competitively for the education nonprofit market and ensure equity across the institution. Compensation for this role is dependent on a number of factors including candidates’ regional cost of labor, number of students in a section, number of class nights for the courses, and number of assessments for the courses. Based on those factors, we use our standard hourly rates for teaching and grading to determine each adjunct instructor’s salary. This means the salary will vary accordingly within a range of $1,300 - $6,100.Compensation may fall outside the range shown if the adjunct instructor's class responsibilities are lower and higher than our estimates. Adjunct instructors are not eligible for a salary at the high end of this range if they live in a region with a low or medium cost of labor.
Lastly, Relay is striving towards internal pay equity throughout our organization. Because of this, we do not negotiate salary offers.
