Summary
We seek an experienced and motivated Controller who can lead our US Accounting Operations with clear and actionable priorities for the US finance team with the primary objective of delivering timely and accurate consolidated trial balance, while safeguarding and championing the accuracy and integrity of the company’s financial information and maintain a strong control environment. This person will also define and implement Finance policies, procedures, and best practices.
Essential Functions
Priority Setting for the Finance Department – Develops and prioritizes day-to-day individual and interdependent department activities, congruent with the monthly and quarterly financial reporting timeline; monitors, identifies and alleviates emerging information bottlenecks that impact the effectiveness of the department; monitors the day-to-day priorities of the Accounting and finance operation team members.
- Leading, Motivating & Coaching Staff – Assists in the functional skills development and performance of the department staff; interprets existing corporate policies and regulatory standards.
- Champion the Accuracy & Integrity of Financial Information – Partner with the Reliance Canada teams to maintains processes for accurately recording transactions in the general ledger and the electronic repository of journal entries. Ensures the integrity of the balance sheet amounts by developing and maintaining excellent practices for GL account reconciliations; assigns reconciliation responsibility among staff and other functional areas; coaches staff and other functional areas on reconciliation procedures. Performs monthly GL reconciliation reviews with the Accounting and other teams.
- Period Close Activities – Issues and updates the monthly accounting schedule and completes all tasks on time; monitors/trouble shoots monthly GL cut-offs to ensure issues related to sub systems feeds are resolved; prepares the consolidated month end trial balance and supporting schedules; implements approved accounting policy changes. Analyzes the monthly and quarterly budget to actual variances.
- Internal Control - Fosters a strong control environment, over financial reporting and the entire organization, by ensuring that department internal controls are designed effectively; spot checks the operating effectiveness of controls and takes corrective action as required.
- IFRS 16 and Capital Assets – Partners with FP&A team in managing the accounting, reconciliation and reporting of reporting for rental assets, non-rental assets, IFRS 16 leased assets (which encompass leased facilities and fleet, etc.,), and other working papers and trend analysis; provides insights into the impact of changes in depreciation rates for rental assets. Assist in the annual budget process for depreciation and capital lease expenses.
- Acquisition Support – Work with the Corporate Controller to perform due diligence procedures, assist with inventory counts on acquisitions, and provide accounting & reporting requirements and support to the newly acquired company’s accounting team.
- Finance Transformation, System Changes and Ad Hoc Projects – Partner with Finance and non-Finance team members across Reliance, to contribute to the successful planning, design, and execution of ad hoc projects
- Organizational Support – proactively works with business partners throughout the organization to provide recommendations on effectiveness, efficiency and controls. Ensures processes are followed and reconciliations performed throughout the business. Development and implementation of processes, procedures, and polices related to acquisitions, systems implementations, new geographies and new products as required.

Required Knowledge
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or equivalent
- Minimum eight to ten years of post-qualification experience in general accounting including GL close process and consolidated trial balances
- Previous experience in supervising accounting and finance operation teams
- Strong understanding of internal controls over financial reporting
- Proven leadership attributes combined with abilities to coach and motivate staff
- Excellent analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
- Ability to provide an excellent standard of customer service and a desire to serve internal customers promptly and courteously
- Excellent relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders and contractors
- Ability to understand concepts beyond accounting, with a strong aptitude for finance and business
- Adaptable in a fast-paced and results driven organization
- Ability to be flexible in order to meet the needs of the business
- Excellent communications skills both written and verbal
- A collaborative project manager: Can manage multiple projects involving different individuals, teams and vendors to meet collective goals on time and with excellence, and can model and extend these practices throughout the organization

- An excellent ambassador: Can clearly communicate both one-to-one as well as widely
- Experience in HVAC, home services, utilities or similar industry an asset
- Experience with SAP, ADP Workforce Now or similar ERP an asset
- Proficient in Microsoft Windows software, including Operating Systems and Office365
