Description:
Under general direction, sets up, operates, and adjusts various types of conventional or automatic machines such as Computer Numberic Controlled (CNC) machines. Works from drawings and written instructions to create replacement and new parts in making complex repairs to metal parts as well as for experimental apparatus or prototype equipment. Able to read and interpret CNC programs. Able to understand coordinates, make necessary offsets, and modify existing CNC programs by changing or adding lines of code to program. Work is diversified and machining is performed to ordinary tolerances. Requires extensive knowledge of various metals and of measurements used in machining processes. May flex to other work areas to provide training or to meet production needs. May provide technical leadership and assist in training less experienced machinists. Typically requires a high school education or equivalent and five or more years of experience. Frequently reports to a Machine Shop Supervisor.
Responsibilities:
- Write/edit/modify programs for CNC Machines
- Operates CNC machines according to exact tolerances specified on engineering prints
- Sets up and operates manual lathes, saws, cutting tools, slotting tools to meet exact tolerances on engineering prints.
- Performs routine inspections and minor maintenance
- Troubleshoots and corrects operational and quality issues
- Ensures the machine is in compliance with operational and safety guidelines
- Performs housekeeping duties as required
- Meets all production standards
- Run entire cell/area or multiple machines as a machinist
- Work in a constant state of alertness
- Regular and predictable attendance
- Work cooperatively with co-workers
Qualifications:
Experience and Skill Required
MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, WORK AIDES:
Must have 5 axis machine experience
Experience and understanding of both vertical and horizontal machining centers
Basic computer skills
Measuring devices such as calipers, micrometers, and tape measures
Hand tools
Lifting devices such as overhead cranes and hoists
Engineering drawings and prints
Hours worked
The Machinist normally works a 40 hour work week. Some overtime may be required to meet production demands.
Minimum Education:
Post high school with emphasis on machinist trade
Minimum Experience:
5 years as a machinist
Necessary Skills:
Demonstrate ability to troubleshoot complex manufacturing operations
Extensive knowledge of tooling application and capabilities
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
Ability to work in auto cad
Ability to write CNC programs
Ability to set up and operate manual lathes and other machines according to precise tolerances
Basic maintenance skills
Ability to work with little or no supervision
Communication skills-Position will require working directly with Supervisors, Programming, and Quality, regarding new and more complex manufacturing processes
