JOB TITLE: MRF Sorter I

DEPARTMENT:
MRF Operations

REPORTS TO:
MRF Operations Manager/Supervisor

EFFECTIVE DATE:

SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for manually sorting inbound recyclables by designated material category, performing a quality control function by removing contaminant materials from the sorting conveyors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Identify and sort inbound material by category (scrap metal, type of plastic, aluminum cans, aluminum foil, type of paper, OCC, residue, prohibitive, contaminants or new commodities as operational changes require).
  • Maintain facility cleaning indoor and outdoor
  • Performs snow removal
  • Demonstrates proper use of hand tools (rakes, brooms and shovels)
  • Attends all required safety training sessions
  • Adheres to all OSHA/Department of Labor regulations and RIRRC MRF safety policies and practices
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or one to three months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Other skills required:
    • Minimum 3 months experience in continuous process manufacturing or assembly operation.
    • Ability to communicate in English is preferred.
    • Must have ability to accurately perform a minimum of 45 material sorting “picks” per minute on a sustained basis.
    • Work scheduled hours as required. At times this includes reporting to work earlier than the routine shift start, remaining on the job after the routine shift end time.
    • Must be able to work overtime on a routine daily basis.
    • Must be able to work Saturdays as plant production goals dictate.
    • Must adhere to all safety requirements and site work rules.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds with assistance/ continually lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision; distance vision; color vision; peripheral vision; depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Additional remarks regarding work environment:
    • Require working in tight and awkward spaces, inside equipment and when necessary, removing jammed-up or built-up material and debris or obstructive items from on top of or inside equipment.
    • Must be comfortable working for extended periods of time at heights of up to 35’ on various pieces of equipment or raised work platforms.
    • Must be able to perform work in an industrial / manufacturing type environment with extended exposure to high levels of noise, heat, humidity, cold, dust, odors, vermin / insects and other disagreeable elements often encountered within the waste and recycling industry as well as the potential to work outdoors in light rain or snow.
    • Must be able to work in varied climate and weather conditions.
  • Specialized equipment, machines, or vehicles used:
    • Must wear all required personal protective safety equipment.
