Basic Function
Under the direction of an administrator or manager, establishes and maintains the accounting and financial record keeping activities of various funds of the District; ensures compliance with provisions of the state adopted Accounting Manual; interprets and implements the California Education Code and new legislation affecting college finances; reviews, prepares, audits, and reconciles financial statements and reports based on schedules and timelines; assists in the overall coordination and implementation of Board Policies and College Procedures.
Representative Duties
Performs complex and analytical technical accounting and auditing to prepare, maintain, and review financial records, accounts, disbursements, and reports; ensures compliance with applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Updates and maintains financial transactions and activities; communicates with a variety of federal, state, and local agencies, internal departments and staff including but not limited to the California State Chancellor’s Office, the Los Angeles County Office of Education, District divisions and/or departments, and project directors. E
Reviews and audits financial documents to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable regulations, requirements, and established procedures. E
Assists with the financial reconciliation of the District’s audit with the California Chancellor’s Office Financial Status (CCFS) 311 Report and General Ledger. E
Reviews fixed assets and supporting documents to ensure that capitalization threshold is in accordance with District and college policy; interacts with buyers and warehouse staff to ensure proper capitalization of fixed assets. E
Performs fixed assets register reconciliation to the general ledger; generate and prepare fixed assets depreciation reports; reviews estimated useful lives to ensure conformity with established policy. E
Prepares, audits, and distributes a broad variety of reports on a monthly, quarterly, and/or annual basis including but not limited to fixed assets, Foundation reports, Associated Student Body (ASB), Auxiliary Service Organization (ASO), and Financial Aid fund; audits and distributes reporting schedule to appropriate administrators and management. E
Serves as the primary resource and performs oversight for the Child Development Center and College Foundation; reviews daily payments, requisitions, and deposits to ensure proper account coding, fund balances, and compliance with special donor-imposed requirements. E
Updates and maintains District Accounting system; performs backup of system and resolves system errors. E
Performs General Ledger analysis; responds to departments’ inquiries and requests. E
Prepares bank reconciliations; audits, updates, and maintains investment accounts. E
Prepares monthly financial statements and reviews with appropriate administrator or manager. E
Partners with Foundation administrator or manager to develop and prepare the annual budget. E
Attends and participates in the Board of Directors’ meetings as needed; responds to questions and/or concerns related to financial statements and assigned budgets. E
Coordinates and assists administration with annual audits; interacts, responds to, and provides information such as PBC schedule to external auditors as needed or assigned. E
Reviews audit report findings and prepares audit notes and schedules. E
Meets with auditors and appropriate administrator or manager to review audit findings and report. E
Generates and prepares monthly, quarterly, and/or annual fiscal reports for District or college departments, special funds, and/or programs including but not limited to the Child Development Center, College Foundation, and other District programs. E
Reviews, interprets, and implements state guidelines to ensure compliance. E
Receives and responds to inquiries from state and federal representatives, District departments, and/or programs. E
Reviews contracts related to accounting activities; revises contracts as necessary; submits new and revised contracts to appropriate administrator or manager for approval. E
Partners with Information Technology (IT) to perform a variety of advanced accounting processes related to the 1098T process including but not limited to review, verification, reconciliation, auditing, uploading of data, and compliance of data merged onto 1098T student forms; revises and corrects student 1098T forms as needed. E
Performs a variety of clerical and administrative responsibilities in support of the department’s day-to-day activities and/or operations utilizing a variety of communication modalities including but not limited to answers and responds to phone calls, emails, text messages, and chat platforms; opens, screens, and distributes mail and correspondence; photocopies documents and requests duplication services; ensures maintenance and repairs of assigned work areas, facilities, or equipment; enters various requests for services from IT, Facilities, and Maintenance; contacts vendors for equipment service, when needed; follows-up with vendors to ensure satisfactory completion of requests; may perform simple repairs or maintenance to standard office equipment. Distinguishable Characteristics
The Senior Accountant is the advanced, experienced, lead-level classification within the Accountant series. The Senior Accountant performs lead responsibilities that impact the day-to-day activities, operations, and workflow of the office; performs advanced, complex, sensitive, and confidential professional accounting functions, special projects, and assists internal and external auditors with special requests, as needed related to the scope of authority and assignment. The Senior Accountant exercises a high level of independent judgement in carrying out complex accounting functions and analysis with greater significance and impact on the fiscal operations within the Business Office Division.
The Senior Accountant is distinguished from the Assistant Accountant in that the latter is the entry-level classification within the Accountant series. The Assistant Accountant performs simple, basic, general, and routine fiscal and accounting activities including the preparation and reconciliation of special reports and accounting functions; assists with reconciliation activities within the District’s financial system and prepares simple financial reports and journal entries. The Assistant Accountant works under is provided with work guidance under general supervision and exercises limited independent judgement within established guidelines, policies, and procedures. Work performed by the Assistant Accountant is routinely verified for accuracy and compliance with established procedures and guidelines.
The Senior Accountant is distinguished from the Accountant in that the latter is the journey level classification within the Accountant series. The Accountant performs professional accounting and financial functions requiring fundamental knowledge of the District’s Business Office’s finance and accounting processes and procedures. The Accountant performs the essential responsibilities of the classification in an accurate and timely manner; exercises a moderate level of initiative and independent judgement to resolve problems related to the assigned accounts and/or funds in accordance with District, college, local, state, and federal policies and procedures. The Accountant works under general supervision and exercises limited independent judgement within well established guidelines, policies, and procedures.
The Senior Accountant is distinguished from the Accountant II in that the latter is the professional level classification within the Accountant series. The Accountant II performs professional accounting and financial functions requiring specialized knowledge of the District’s finance and accounting processes and procedures. The Accountant II is expected to perform the assigned responsibilities in an accurate and timely manner to meet expected, timeline and/or deadline driven processes; exercises initiative in resolving problems related to the assigned essential responsibilities of the classification. The Accountant II works under limited supervision and exercises independent judgement in carrying out the assigned duties of the classification.

Distinguishable Characteristics
The Senior Accountant is the advanced, experienced, lead-level classification within the Accountant series. The Senior Accountant performs lead responsibilities that impact the day-to-day activities, operations, and workflow of the office; performs advanced, complex, sensitive, and confidential professional accounting functions, special projects, and assists internal and external auditors with special requests, as needed related to the scope of authority and assignment. The Senior Accountant exercises a high level of independent judgement in carrying out complex accounting functions and analysis with greater significance and impact on the fiscal operations within the Business Office Division.
The Senior Accountant is distinguished from the Assistant Accountant in that the latter is the entry-level classification within the Accountant series. The Assistant Accountant performs simple, basic, general, and routine fiscal and accounting activities including the preparation and reconciliation of special reports and accounting functions; assists with reconciliation activities within the District’s financial system and prepares simple financial reports and journal entries. The Assistant Accountant works under is provided with work guidance under general supervision and exercises limited independent judgement within established guidelines, policies, and procedures. Work performed by the Assistant Accountant is routinely verified for accuracy and compliance with established procedures and guidelines.
The Senior Accountant is distinguished from the Accountant in that the latter is the journey level classification within the Accountant series. The Accountant performs professional accounting and financial functions requiring fundamental knowledge of the District’s Business Office’s finance and accounting processes and procedures. The Accountant performs the essential responsibilities of the classification in an accurate and timely manner; exercises a moderate level of initiative and independent judgement to resolve problems related to the assigned accounts and/or funds in accordance with District, college, local, state, and federal policies and procedures. The Accountant works under general supervision and exercises limited independent judgement within well established guidelines, policies, and procedures.
The Senior Accountant is distinguished from the Accountant II in that the latter is the professional level classification within the Accountant series. The Accountant II performs professional accounting and financial functions requiring specialized knowledge of the District’s finance and accounting processes and procedures. The Accountant II is expected to perform the assigned responsibilities in an accurate and timely manner to meet expected, timeline and/or deadline driven processes; exercises initiative in resolving problems related to the assigned essential responsibilities of the classification. The Accountant II works under limited supervision and exercises independent judgement in carrying out the assigned duties of the classification.
