The Position
The Ramp Supervisor is responsible for coordinating the terminal’s operations to ensure that the retention of service levels satisfies the customer’s requirements. The Ramp Supervisor takes direction from policies and procedures established by the Company, Vice Presidents, Assistant Vice Presidents, Directors, Assistant Terminal Managers and Terminal Manager.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Oversees the scheduling and coordinating the intermodal activities of the terminal. This includes the ramping and de-ramping of trailers and containers based on the fluctuation of business level needs.
- Assures that personnel are meeting the performance levels of the productivity goals and maintaining acceptable service levels based on set company standards.
- Prioritizes outbound trailer loads to meet train schedules, and empty return programs; has direct contact with customers for spotting and pulling intermodal trains; designates availability of equipment to meet customer requirements and ensures security of all operations within the confines of the intermodal yard.
- Assists in the company’s safety policies by upholding a high level of standard for all employees.
- Monitor the intermodal freight is handled in such a manner that is cost-effective for the company while meeting the customer’s service standards.
- Coordinates inbound and outbound trains to insure accuracy and securement is established and maintained on all units.
- Responsible for determining manpower levels, personnel schedules and duties assigned.
- Prioritizes facilitation of outbound trailer loads to meet train schedules and manages empty return programs.
- Directs contact with customers ensuring that all customer requirements are met and security of all operations are confined within the intermodal yard.
- Consistent daily contact is maintained with the Assistant Terminal Managers and Terminal Manager for informational purposes and recommendations to improve productivity and cost controls.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Valid Drivers License
- Advanced knowledge of railroad industry from a vocational education institute, apprenticeship, on the job training and/or similar work experience.
- Ability to assist in conflict resolution and mediation between co-workers.
- Proven managerial skills to include ability as a strong leader and positive motivator, successful with employee trainings, good understanding of a Collective Bargaining Agreement, government regulations and industry standards.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills to coordinate with a variety of individuals.
Work environment:
- Required job duties are performed in both an indoor climate-controlled environment and ambient outdoor environments, which would include varying conditions (rain, snow, ice, heat, wind, cold, etc.).
- The position may also be required to travel throughout the yard and the transfer station either by walking or driving.
- The noise level in work environment is occasional.
