The Education Department at Roanoke College invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor to begin August, 2023. Applicants should hold a terminal degree (or ABD with a firm completion date) in Curriculum & Instruction, Social Foundations, Language, Literacy, & Culture, or other education field. It is preferred that applicants hold, or have held, a teaching license, and have three years of K-12 teaching experience.
We seek a colleague to work among a cohesive and respectful departmental group, as well as among the other departments with whom we collaborate, and the community partners who help us serve our students in real-world settings. We hold 16 education majors, 15 of which lead to Virginia teacher licensure, including Elementary Education and 14 secondary and PK-12 level areas that span the fine arts, the sciences, math, languages, and TESL. Our non-licensure major, Education Studies, allows students to pursue education-related fields along one of two strands: Creative Expression and Literacy, or Community Education and Social Change. .The ideal candidate uses current research-based teaching methods and learning theory, has excellent interpersonal skills, and is able to promote/represent the department in the community as well as on campus. Our newest initiative is BRIDGES, a program focused on the recruitment of students of color who want to become teachers and the integration of culturally responsive and relevant pedagogy across the curriculum.
The successful candidate will teach seven classes per year, including courses within the college's general education program, and may supervise students in the field.
