JUVENILE OFFICER III – Supervisor

Starting wage is $45,648 - $46,488 annually with the potential of a pay increase after a 6-month successful probationary period.

The salary for a current state employee transferring will be taken into consideration

We are looking for an energetic person to serve in a highly responsible supervisory position involving both the management and supervision of a combined detention and residential assessment center. An employee in this position is vested with the statutory authority of a juvenile officer to take charge of children in custody in a juvenile detention center. This position reports directly to the superintendent.

This position assists in providing for the daily operation and over-all management of the Robert L. Perry Juvenile Justice Center. This includes organizing and directing the total program and for providing direct supervision to all staff, assisting in developing and implementing in-services training and staff development programs, and evaluating on a continuing basis the quality and effectiveness of staff members’ performance. The position involves establishing and maintaining relationships with social agencies and community groups, and interpreting the functions of the Juvenile Court and its services to the public. This position is responsible for ensuring that the Missouri Standards for Operation of a Secure Juvenile Detention Facility are met.

Position Responsibilities:

· Completes pre-disposition assessments, placement reports, waiver of jurisdiction investigation reports, and all other reports as assigned, especially those related to the more serious and violent juvenile offenders in placement at the Juvenile Justice Center, and juveniles placed here by other regional circuits, for evaluation.

· Consults and participates with superintendent in formulation of intensive and offender-specific treatment/intervention recommendations for serious and violent juvenile offenders, and for juveniles from other regional circuits.

· Directly supervises detention deputy juvenile officers, detention aides, program assistants and the internship program.

· Collects, maintains, and presents data for use in comparison studies, recognition of trends, etc.

· Coordinates all internal evaluations/assessments being completed by Family Court Services staff or Juvenile Justice Center staff.

· Coordinates all referrals for psychiatric services. Ensures that court-ordered psychiatric evaluations are obtained in a timely manner.

· Coordinates all approved appointments, for youths in placement at the Juvenile Justice Center, with school personnel, counselors, therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, etc.

· Coordinates all referrals for substance abuse screening.

· Ensures that necessary testing is completed by the respective school districts, for youths undergoing evaluation; procures past counseling records, if applicable, for those youths.

· Serves as direct liaison with psychologists appointed by the court to conduct sex offender evaluations on youths in placement at the Juvenile Justice Center.

· Serves as direct liaison with other agencies involved with youths being evaluated at the Juvenile Justice Center, such as mental health agencies, medical facilities, school districts, counseling agencies, juvenile offices, etc.

· Assists in program development for the Juvenile Justice Center and the Family Court Services programs.

· Performs all other duties as assigned by the superintendent and/or court administrator.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess exceptional organizational skills.
  • Must possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must possess a working knowledge of office computer applications, preferably the software used at the Juvenile Justice Center.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, associates, clients, parents or guardians, legal representatives, medical and mental health professionals, and the general public.

Minimum Education & Experience:

· Must be 21 years of age.

  • Graduate of a four-year college or university with a degree in Criminal Justice Administration, Criminology, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work or related field
  • Three years' experience as a Juvenile Officer II or Detention Juvenile Officer II
