Rock City Employee Cooperative, the parent company of Rock City Cafe and Rock City Coffee Roasters, is looking for a Manager for its Cafe in the beautiful coastal town of Rockland, Maine. Rock City Cafe is a coffeehouse/cafe and has been a central hub of Rockland for 30 years. As we roast our own coffee, we are widely known for our excellent beans and drinks. The Cafe currently has 20 employees and is open for breakfast and lunch.

The applicant for Manager must have at least two years of management experience in the food business, including scheduling, budgeting, overseeing both the kitchen and front of the house, organizing training, moderating employee conflicts, and monitoring cost of goods and labor costs. The Manager will work five days a week, including at least one weekend day.

The Manager of the Cafe will meet regularly with the Roastery Manager to enhance and maintain the connection between the two entities.

As an employee-owned business, Rock City has a Board of Directors to whom the Manager will report, presenting an overview of the Cafe operations at the monthly meetings with the Board.

Overview

Manages a full counter and kitchen staff in meeting sales, service, customer satisfaction, and profitability goals for the store. Provides excellent customer service and performs sales. Is a role model for staff in appearance and interaction. Maintains a clean and professional appearance of self and Cafe. Ensures that inventory is maintained at sufficient levels. Schedules store staff and supervises staff as needed. Hires and fires Cafe staff, follows all policies and procedures.

  • Reports to the Board of Directors
  • Salaried: For 40 hours or more per week including at least one weekend day
  • Minimum Educational Qualifications: High school diploma or GED
  • Customer service experience required
  • One year minimum Management experience in the restaurant industry required
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of food prep and/or coffee a plus
  • Computer literacy is a must
  • We require that all employees use the apps “Slack” for communication and “Homebase” for scheduling.

  • Ability to provide an outstanding customer experience
  • Knowledge of basic economic and budgeting principles and practices
  • Ability to schedule, lead, and develop a staff of 20 to 25 people as a team, with respect, compassion, and high expectations
  • Ability to monitor cost of goods and labor costs within budgeted objectives
  • Ability to work independently and/or collaboratively as needed to achieve overall goals
  • Ability to use a Mac and cloud-based POS system and accessories as required
  • Excellent organizational management skills and follow through
  • Ability to delegate and ensure tasks are completed
  • Situational awareness and an ability to adapt

Essential Responsibilities

  • Oversee and coordinate kitchen and counter staff
  • Oversee shift changes, ensure that everyone knows what their scheduled role is
  • Recruit, interview, select, hire, and employ an appropriate number of employees
  • Provide oversight and direction to the employees according to the businesses policies and procedures
  • Train and supervise shift leaders
  • Coach, mentor, and develop staff
  • Build enthusiasm in employees to take responsibility for their jobs and the business’s goals.
  • Foster a spirit of teamwork and unity among employees that allows for disagreement over ideas, yet expeditious conflict resolution; the appreciation of diversity, yet cohesiveness and support as a team to enable each employee to succeed.
  • Consciously create a workplace culture that is consistent with the business’s identified mission, vision, guiding principles and values.
  • Lead employees to meet the business’s expectations for productivity, quality, and goal accomplishment
  • Provide effective performance feedback to employees
  • Make business decisions that are financially responsible, accountable, and justifiable according to the business’s policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate a willingness and ability to learn about coffee, tea, food, and the associated merchandise we sell. Communicate this information effectively to customers & staff
  • Ensure that your employees receive adequate training on products, operations, policies. and procedures
  • Maintain employee work schedules including assignments, job rotation, training, paid time off, cover for absenteeism, and overtime scheduling
  • Ensure that the store’s appearance is neat and clean at all times
  • Follow all written procedures related to using the POS for sales, inventory, receiving payments, counting back change, and providing receipts to customers
  • File First Incident reports with workers’ comp company if an employee is injured
  • Deposit daily register earnings
  • Maintain transparent communication. Appropriately communicate business information through department meetings, one-on-one meetings, email, IM, Slack, and daily interactions.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, carry and otherwise move up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for various lengths of time throughout the day
  • Ability to use computer equipment, POS system, and telephone to complete daily work responsibilities
