Overview

RTI International's new Center for Data Modernization Solutions has an opening for a Senior Scientific Computing Principal Investigator to lead and support projects that involve interdisciplinary topics across the research data lifecycle. This role will make significant contributions to RTI’s growing research portfolio in clinical, research, and/or public health data modernization efforts. These efforts include the design, development, and implementation of biomedical computing environments and public health reporting/surveillance systems as well as the capture and secondary use of data created within healthcare, to support research and surveillance projects.

This role will also make contributions to thought leadership at RTI in proposal development and client engagement, technical/scientific stature and dissemination, reputation-building, and strategic planning initiatives at various levels of the organization to support development of research and scientific priorities.

This position is available for teleworking in the U.S.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:

  • Participate in strategic planning initiatives across various levels of the organization to determine research policies and priorities, which have broad organizational implications.
  • Generate business opportunities by establishing close client and partner relationships.
  • Expand on RTI’s reputation as a leader in public health and/or biomedical data modernization (e.g., authoring articles published in peer-reviewed journals, presenting to internal/external clients and at professional meetings, etc.).
  • Lead large, complex, and data-centric projects and tasks, including directing the scientific, financial, and administrative tasks on complex projects involving multidisciplinary, cross-unit research teams and external partner organizations.
  • Lead the development of research products and artifacts (i.e., reports, manuscripts, presentations, guidance documents, memos) in collaboration with the client and project team and manage quality control processes to ensure delivery of high-quality work products.
  • Manage and mentor staff on projects. 
  • Maintain professional relationships as a representative or advisor to external advisory or policy boards and councils, research organizations, professional organizations, and/or educational institutions.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 15 years of experience, Master's degree and at least 10 years of experience, PhD and at least 6 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Strong understanding of biomedical and/or public health data modernization, including FAIR data principles, as well as tracking priorities across multiple federal and state agencies, and the related data, analytic tools/methods, collaborations, and governance processes required to support agencies in meeting those goals.
  • Lead and/or actively participate in business development activities, such as proposal development, identifying new work opportunities, building relationships with external collaborators and partners, and leading meetings with clients. 
  • Demonstrated record of developing research-related publications and presentations.
  • Prior experience leading and/or collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams, including but not limited to software developers, data scientists, statisticians, epidemiologists, clinicians, economists, and health services researchers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience working with large-scale data sources (e.g., omics, clinical, claims, EHR, disease registry) and analytic tools/platforms/programming languages (e.g., Kubernetes, cloud microservices, R, Python).
  • Proven ability to design and leverage diverse data sources and analytic methods to support client needs around making data FAIR and supporting data-driven decision-making in research, community, and/or public health settings.

The anticipated pay range for this role is listed below. Our pay ranges represent national averages and may vary by location as a geographic differential may be applied to some locations within the United States.

RTI considers multiple factors when making an offer including, for example: established salary range, internal budget, business needs, and education and years of work experience possessed by the applicant. Further, salary is merely one element to our offer.
