Summary:
The Laboratory Technician enters patient demographic information and places laboratory test orders in the LIS. Also, is responsible for report distribution. Issues laboratory results over the telephone in a professional and courteous manner. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.
Responsibilities:
1. Enters medical record number correctly all of the time.
2. Handles specimens properly with no specimen labeling errors per year.
3. Performs accurate computer entry of demographic information.
4. Performs accurate computer entry of laboratory test orders.
5. Notifies appropriate personnel of problems.
6. Performs multiple computer entry/inquiry functions.
7. Sorts and distributes computer generated reports.
8. Prepares specimens correctly for delivery and/or transport.
9. Operates the pneumatic tube station according to division guidelines.
10. Performs multiple computer specimen receiving functions.
11. Documents specimen receipt and resolves problems if necessary.
12. Processes specimens.
13. Uses the telephone properly and gives accurate information.
14. Reports accurate results.
15. Suggests and performs follow-up where appropriate.
16. Volunteers or willingly participates in special projects and completes them within an agreed upon time frame.
Other information:
Required Job Qualifications:
High School Graduate.
Typing speed over 35 wpm.
Previous experience in a hospital laboratory and/or as a phlebotomist is helpful.
Employees in this job classification are qualified to perform waived testing.
Employees' education and/or laboratory experience meet the requirements delineated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA '88).
Preferred Job Qualifications:
Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology.
Physical Demands:
The technician's time is divided between laboratory test order entry and working in a laboratory with frequent exposure to potentially infectious specimens.
