Founded in 1923 by notable textile giant Benjamin C. Russell, Russell Hospital opened its doors July 17, 1923 on the current site of the Alexander City Board of Education in downtown Alexander City. The 55-bed hospital was maintained by Russell Manufacturing Company throughout the first decades as the primary healthcare provider for employees of Russell Manufacturing and the residents of Alexander City.

In 1959, Russell Hospital Corporation was organized and the original Russell Hospital was transferred to the Corporation. Upon transfer, the Corporation began planning for a replacement facility. The existing site, located on US Highway 280, was acquired from Russell Corporation and a new 100-bed facility was opened to the public on February 2, 1965. The medical facilities were transformed and expanded again in 1977, 1990, 1998, 2001, 2004 and 2008. In 1996 the facility name was changed from Russell Hospital and Healthcare Centers to Russell Medical Center, reflecting the changes in services, technology and complexity.

Russell Medical serves patients in a seven-county service area, including Tallapoosa, Elmore, Talladega, Clay, Lee and Chambers counties.
