We recruit top talent and are currently seeking a Controller to join our Corporate Finance team in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The Controller is a key member of the finance team and is responsible for leading the daily finance team operations including financial reporting, revenue recognition, billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, general ledger reconciliation, project-based accounting and work-in-progress, treasury, tax, FAR compliance procedures, and project analysis. The Controller will report directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and will work closely with the CFO to impact the strategic direction of the company. The Controller will partner with operations to evaluate business practices and ensure financial efficiencies and to ensure internal controls are in place and effective. The Controller is a strategic and operational leader who exhibits a high level of professionalism. As a leader within the finance team, the Controller will have proven experience leading, motivating and developing team members. The Controller must have the ability to direct and lead a culture of continuous process improvement. The Controller is also responsible for establishing and maintaining the appropriate accounting procedures and internal controls to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting in accordance with GAAP. The Controller must have a strong attention to detail and excellent communication skills.
Key Responsibilities will include:
- Supervise all financial reporting functions, including the monthly general ledger close, account reconciliations, financial statement preparation, and financial forecasting, to ensure timely and accurate delivery of period end results;
- Provide technical accounting guidance, conduct research for new accounting pronouncements as warranted;
- Establish revenue recognition policies and procedures that are operationally efficient and technically sound;
- Lead activities related to implementing the current lease accounting standards;
- Ensure that the company complies with all financial, legal and regulatory requirements, including quarterly and annual debt covenants;
- Analyze and improve current accounting processes and practices;
- Actively manage the company cash balances and produce weekly, monthly and quarterly cash forecasts;
- Work with the CFO to direct the standardization of the company's billing and accounts receivable functions;
- Maintain and improve the financial review and analysis of trends in key performance indicators for period end;
- Maintain and improve the internal control environment and related documentation;
- Lead the budgeting and forecasting process, including the gathering of necessary data, development of supporting models, collaboration with the business units to develop assumptions and drive targets, and consolidating and communicating results;
- Develop project analysis activities and processes to improve project profitability;
- Develop performance measures and monitoring systems that support the company's strategic direction;
- Develop financial models and analysis to support strategic initiatives and acquisition strategies;
- Provide technical accounting knowledge and expertise to evaluate complex transactions;
- Function as primary point of contact for the annual audits (financial, FAR, employee benefit plan), tax return preparation, annual valuation, and employee benefit plan annual compliance work (401k and ESOP);
- Support the CFO and other senior leadership team members in preparing data and analyzing reports for the executive leadership team meetings and board meetings;
- Manage and forecast the company's direct stock ownership and ESOP repurchase liability;
- Direct third party administers per the plan document on all 401k and ESOP related matters.
- Stay current on changes in the ESOP environment and work with the CFO and external legal counsel to provide guidance and strategy to the CEO and Board on the ownership structure of the company;
- Monitor risk management policies and procedures to ensure that organizational risks are minimized;
- Identify and lead the implementation of new software systems, including fixed asset and lease software, travel and expense software, and the selection of a new financial accounting system;
- Attract, hire, and retain a team of high-performing professionals who possess outstanding knowledge, experience, ethics, and integrity;
- Coach and manage performance of direct reports as it relates to planning, monitoring and appraising job results and their supervision of extended team, to ensure focus on company objectives;
- Promote professionalism daily; create and maintain a positive work environment.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Accounting or Finance required;
- Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) required;
- 5 years' experience in a senior executive finance role;
- 10 years' experience in finance and managing a team;
- Experience with project-based accounting;
- Understanding of Work in Progress (WIP);
- Experience in the engineering industry preferred;
- Proven Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) knowledge and experience;
- Experience with BST software preferred.
