We are currently accepting applications for an immediate opening for a full time, Geotechnical Technician to be based at our Somersworth, New Hampshire office. The S. W. Cole Engineering team is an established employee owned firm with a history of over 40 years of success and stable growth serving clients throughout New England.
This position participates in project work and geotechnical assignments that includes coordinating and monitoring explorations, field investigations, installing and reading geotechnical instruments and construction observation of earthworks, deep foundations and ground improvements. Will also occasionally assist our construction materials testing department, and have some involvement in trade organizations.

Job Functions
- Coordinate and provide observations of exploration work and sampling.
- Observe, monitor and document a wide variety of geotechnical specialty construction related field activities including subgrade observations, pile driving, pre-blast surveys, blast monitoring, geotechnical instrumentation, ground improvements, shoring, soil anchors and rock anchors.
- Conduct geotechnical field testing.
- Assist geotechnical engineers with geotechnical investigations and studies.
- Prepare written deliverables including exploration logs, daily field reports and data summaries.
- Collect project data, conduct records research, and gather documents.
- Communicate effectively and consistently with clients and other professionals.
- Accurately track time spent on projects.
- Safe operation and handling of company testing equipment and vehicles in accordance with company policies/safety policies.
- Assist project managers with budgets and proposals.
- Sample pick-up and delivery.
- Practice confidentiality according to company policy.
- Clean and maintain field and lab equipment.
- Other tasks as assigned.
Job Requirements
- In-depth knowledge and use of computer software including MS Office, Adobe Acrobat and must be able to learn new programs.
- Understand and apply math skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of geotechnical concepts.
- Skilled in collecting and organizing data.
- Ability to maintain records of materials, supplies, time, and work performed.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral form.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred or Associate degree in related field with 2 years of related experience, or 4 years of related experience.
- Driver’s License and valid Automobile Insurance.
Other Requirements
- Regularly spend long hours sitting/standing and using office equipment and computers.
- Conducts sample testing and handling of equipment requiring lifting, carrying and bending up to 40 pounds.
- Driving for long periods of time and more frequent shorter trips.
- Close, distant, and peripheral vision.
- Ability to interact appropriately with a variety of individuals.
- Ability to remember and understand verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to reason logically and make decisions.
