Position Summary:

The Animal Commissary Coordinator (Full Time) serves as a member of the Animal Care Department at the Sacramento Zoo. The employee will train and perform all duties related to Commissary Work, including diet preparation, inventory management, kitchen, storage and support area cleaning and maintenance. Most Commissary Work is done mainly within the Animal Care Kitchen and nearby support facilities at the Zoo. The employee will be assigned to perform Commissary Coordinator Work shifts throughout the life of the position, no matter the level of training completed. The position is not intended to offer advancement to animal keeper roles, it is a focused position on coordinating all activities related to the Animal Commissary. This position requires a flexible schedule. Days and hours worked, by nature of the position, will vary as needed, included weekends and holidays. Anticipated schedule will be 5 days a week, with 8-hour workdays.

Position will participate and contribute to any duties and projects as needed to assist the Sacramento Zoo in achieving its overall mission as well as maintain Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accreditation.

Position reports to: Animal Care Supervisor under direction of Senior Manager of Animal Care.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities for Commissary Work:

· On your own or with Animal Keeper staff perform all day-to-day duties required in maintaining the Animal Care Commissary and Support areas.

· Preparation of diverse and precise exotic animal diets following strict diet instructions.

· Coordinate detailed communication incoming and outgoing with a variety of zoo staff and vendors related to animal diets, diet changes, diet questions, food supplies, deliveries and other commissary related communication.

· Develop and implement processes and procedures related to coordinating Animal Commissary activities.

· Maintain a safe and sanitary work environment.

· Cleaning, disinfection and maintenance of Animal Care Commissary as well as surrounding Support and Storage areas.

· Rotate all food and supply stocks as necessary.

· Process, inventory, store, rotate, track and order incoming food and other supply stocks.

· Maintain food and supply stock inventories. Manage food and supply integrity and stock levels.

· Work without close supervision. Exercise sound judgment in analyzing emergency situations. Follow all safety guidelines and policies during general duties as well as emergency situations.

· Assist in directing volunteers to their assigned areas and/or their duties.

Qualifications, Knowledge Of and Abilities:

· Extensive knowledge of spoken and written English sufficient to understand verbal and written instructions.

· Basic knowledge of arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages).

· Possess basic knowledge of food preparation methods and procedures.

· Possess basic knowledge of sanitation, infection and spoilage control procedures.

· Ability to learn and apply AZA Accreditation and USDA health, safety, and sanitation regulations and procedures as they relate to operation of an AZA Zoological Facility.

· Understand and follow written and oral instructions and communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.

· Ability to work with a wide variety of animal food items including mice, rats, fish, insects, animal parts/meat and other items.

· Ability to learn about, use and maintain materials and equipment used in an Animal Care food preparation kitchen.

· Proficient in general computer use including common programs such as Word, Excel & Outlook.

· Ability to work independently at a fast efficient pace.

· Ability to safely use and handle chemicals and disinfectants.

· Ability to follow specific diet and other written instructions.

· Lift, carry and push or pull objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.

· Knowledge of, or ability to learn about AZA programs, mission, conservation goals and overall operations.

· Knowledge of, or ability to learn about animal biology, nutrition, natural history, behavior and medical health, as it relates to an animal nutrition program.

· Make minor repairs and perform general maintenance and light construction utilizing various hand held power tools.

· Perform tours or presentations or media segments as needed related to the Animal Commissary.

· Perform general duty labor for extended periods and under adverse weather conditions.

· Obtain ServSafe Food Handler certification within 3 months of employment.

Experience:

· Minimum 1 year paid experience working in a food service kitchen in a coordinator or lead staff related role, or actual zoo animal commissary related role. Other paid experience in a coordinator or lead role may be discussed with management as appropriate experience.

Education:

· Some college experience or degree preferred.

License or Certification:

· Possession of a valid Driver’s License at the time of appointment is required; loss of the license is cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Job Type: Full-time
