POSITION TITLE: Safety and Security Officer 

DEPARTMENT: Safety and Security 

POSITION STATUS: FT, 12mo 

POSITION REPORTS TO: Safety and Security Supervisor 

 

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Safety and Security Supervisor, protects university property against fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry; inspects facilities to ensure compliance with occupational safety and health regulations; provides for the safety of persons on campus by performing the following duties. 

 

Major Responsibilities/Activities
 

  • On assigned shift routinely conducts patrols of all buildings and grounds, on foot and in vehicle, checking interior and exterior doors, windows, gates, etc. for any safety or mechanical problems, building conditions and security violations. Each building and grounds patrol is accurately noted in the daily report, work orders are submitted for all safety and mechanical problems and security violations are issued for unsecured areas.  
  • Reports for duty before start of assigned shifts, remains on duty until relieved, briefs incoming officers before end of shift. 
  • Through use of the BASIS system generates USF ID cards, adds appropriate access levels as needed, sets and overrides electronic door access.  
  • Enforces traffic regulations through the use of written citations, enters citation information into the patrol database.  
  • Is prepared to provide emergency medical response by maintaining CPR/AED first aid certification. Calls for EMS response when needed. 
  • Conducts monthly inspections of all fire extinguishers, first aid kits, emergency shower/eyewash stations, emergency call boxes, and maintains all associated records.  
  • Using calendar system opens all buildings, rooms, and areas required before the start of all scheduled events; secures buildings, rooms and areas at the conclusion of those events. 
  • When off-duty is available by phone or email, returns time sensitive messages within an effective time limit.  
  • Provides a security presence for athletic events, special events and fills in open shifts when requested. 
  • Answers the phone during shift, identifies department and self to caller and maintains radio contact with other on-duty officers.  
  • Communicates verbally and in writing with all campus constituents in a clear, professional manner.  
  • Provides timely assistance when requested to jump start vehicles and add air to tires.   
  • Provides timely response to requests for escort service, as a safety precaution or for medical reasons, provides observational presence when requested. 
  • Verifies reservations and checks out campus vehicles by issuing paperwork and keys. Checks vehicles back in when it is returned through inspection and completing paperwork, submitting work orders for any noted problems, and maintains all records. 
  • Respond promptly to incidents and accidents. Conduct initial investigation and fill in an accident check sheet and take photos as needed. Generate the appropriate incident report after situation is resolved. 
  • In emergency situations is prepared to assume responsibility as Incident Commander, notifying all appropriate university personnel, local agencies, then assists as requested on their arrival. 
  • Provides information, direction and assistance to guests, visitors, and the campus community in a courteous and professional manner. 
  • Enforce federal, state, local, and university regulations affecting students, employees, and guests in an impartial and courteous manner. 
  • Carries out orders and assignments appropriately and in the specified time frame.  
  • Adheres to departmental standards and expectations as set forth in the security manual. 
  • Consistently demonstrates behaviors and attitudes congruent with the philosophy of the University of Saint Francis and the Franciscan Values. 
  • Must report any change to driving status or criminal infraction within 24 hours to supervisor. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Education  

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. 

 

Experience   

  • A minimum of one year of experience in the security field, police, military or other related field will be required. Training or equivalent combination of education and experience in relevant field will be considered.   

 

Licenses and Certifications 

  • Must obtain within 1 year of employment or maintain current CPR, AED and First Aid certification.  

 

Knowledge and Skills  

  • Familiar with Microsoft Excel, Word, Access and Outlook  
  • Use university ID, access and CCTV systems.   
  • Ability use the fire panels both to read reported data and to input data  
  • Must be familiar with OSHA safety regulations. 
  • Ability to read and comprehend written and verbal instructions, correspondence, and memos.   
  • Ability to write clear, concise communications and reports. 
  • Be able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
