Starting wage: $40,588 annualized (71-D)

Note: The hours for this position are approximately 2 p.m. – 10 p.m. Monday – Friday.

Purpose Statement

The Night Custodian – Middle School maintains an attractive, sanitary, healthy and safe facility for students, staff and public; provides equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; ensures that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner; oversees assigned staff in the performance of their assignments; and minimizes property damage, loss and liability exposure.

This position reports to the Head Custodian.

Minimum Qualifications

1. High school or equivalent
2. Ability to pass a fingerprint and criminal background check
3. One (1) year of custodial experience, including supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications

1. Preference will be given to candidates who currently serve as a contract custodian, C lane or higher (day or evening)
2. Spanish or other language proficiency, including ability to read, write, speak, and understand

Essential Functions

1. Valid Driver’s license and evidence of insurability
2. Able to follow safety practices and procedures, including industrial cleaning methods, “Team Cleaning,” Integrated Pest Management (I.P.M.) and Green Cleaning concepts
3. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and experienced using data-based software
4. Speak, read, write, and present professionally, analyze, and interpret English written and verbal communications
5. Arrange furnishings and equipment in order to provide adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and events
6. Clean assigned school facilities (e.g. classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, pools, grounds, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, healthy, safe and attractive environment while utilizing industrial cleaning methods, team cleaning, I.P.M., and Green Cleaning concepts and cleaning tools (e.g. Protexus Electostatic sprayers with Pathosans cleaner, etc.)
7. Maintain supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) in order to ensure the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities
8. Oversee assigned custodial staff to provide ongoing custodial services until the Head Custodian returns from leave
9. Participate in meetings and training (e.g. blood borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, etc.) to receive information on new and/or improved procedures
10. Prepare facility for nightly operations (e.g. closing gates, vacuum, building access doors, arming security systems, lower flags, minor repairs, etc.) to ensure facilities are operational and safe for occupancy
11. Remove snow from public walkways to maintain a safe environment in winter
12. Repair minor furniture and equipment damage in order to ensure that items are available and in safe working condition
13. Respond to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, alarms, etc.) to take appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning educational environment
14. Secure facilities and grounds to minimize property damage, equipment loss and potential liability to organization
15. Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders.
16. Participate in meetings, workshops, seminars, as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or or gathering information required to perform functions.
17. Work under limited supervision, utilizing time-management and prioritization strategies, accurately processing detailed information and meeting deadlines.
18. Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to effectively perform the duties of the

20. Speak, read, write, analyze, understand, and follow written and verbal communication in English including grammar and punctuation; listen to, and understand information and ideas presented verbally or in writing.
21. Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively.
22. As needed, roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 60% walking, and 30% standing. This job is performed under some temperature variations and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
