Note: The hours for this position are approximately 2 p.m. – 10 p.m. Monday – Friday.
Purpose Statement
The Night Custodian – Middle School maintains an attractive, sanitary, healthy and safe facility for students, staff and public; provides equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; ensures that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner; oversees assigned staff in the performance of their assignments; and minimizes property damage, loss and liability exposure.
This position reports to the Head Custodian.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school or equivalent
- Ability to pass a fingerprint and criminal background check
- One (1) year of custodial experience, including supervisory experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Preference will be given to candidates who currently serve as a contract custodian, C lane or higher (day or evening)
- Spanish or other language proficiency, including ability to read, write, speak, and understand
Essential Functions
- Valid Driver’s license and evidence of insurability
- Able to follow safety practices and procedures, including industrial cleaning methods, “Team Cleaning,” Integrated Pest Management (I.P.M.) and Green Cleaning concepts
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and experienced using data-based software
- Speak, read, write, and present professionally, analyze, and interpret English written and verbal communications
- Arrange furnishings and equipment in order to provide adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and events
- Clean assigned school facilities (e.g. classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, pools, grounds, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, healthy, safe and attractive environment while utilizing industrial cleaning methods, team cleaning, I.P.M., and Green Cleaning concepts and cleaning tools (e.g. Protexus Electostatic sprayers with Pathosans cleaner, etc.)
- Maintain supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) in order to ensure the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities
- Oversee assigned custodial staff to provide ongoing custodial services until the Head Custodian returns from leave
- Participate in meetings and training (e.g. blood borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, etc.) to receive information on new and/or improved procedures
- Prepare facility for nightly operations (e.g. closing gates, vacuum, building access doors, arming security systems, lower flags, minor repairs, etc.) to ensure facilities are operational and safe for occupancy
- Remove snow from public walkways to maintain a safe environment in winter
- Repair minor furniture and equipment damage in order to ensure that items are available and in safe working condition
- Respond to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, alarms, etc.) to take appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning educational environment
- Secure facilities and grounds to minimize property damage, equipment loss and potential liability to organization
- Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders.
- Participate in meetings, workshops, seminars, as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or or gathering information required to perform functions.
- Work under limited supervision, utilizing time-management and prioritization strategies, accurately processing detailed information and meeting deadlines.

- Adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions, as required.
- Speak, read, write, analyze, understand, and follow written and verbal communication in English including grammar and punctuation; listen to, and understand information and ideas presented verbally or in writing.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively.
- As needed, roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds.

Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 60% walking, and 30% standing. This job is performed under some temperature variations and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
