The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
The Director of Security is the senior leader administering and maintaining policies to assure the safety of property, assets and people. Overseeing a wide variety of leadership tasks related to ensuring teams effectively patrol the zoo grounds and surrounding area to prevent theft, violence, and other infractions. Will provide support on First Aid and CPR calls, maintain public calm during emergency situations, and backup to outside emergency personnel as required. Will develop a strong professional relationship with outside organizations including law enforcement, fire, security leadership at other theme parks/attraction areas, local paramedics, etc.
As a Director of Security, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:
- Create and implement security, and first aid strategic plans.
- Become involved in the Rapid Response Team (RRT) as a captain representing the team regarding process/procedures related to guest and zoo crew.
- Work with local law enforcement, fire, hospital/paramedic, and theme park/attraction security team to enhance knowledge base within department and organization.
- Evaluate current processes and make recommendations to the SVP of Operations on department operation efficiencies.
- Determine training and development needs within the department.
- Create a daily checklist for Security Ambassadors, Security Officers, and EMT Team.
- Ensure department leadership are maintaining equipment and following yearly expense budgets.
- Train staff to ensure the highest standard of guest satisfaction related to security/EMT interactions with guests.
- Conduct regular reviews and drills to maintain quality of operation. Safely operate zoo company vehicles.
- Work with contractors and/or suppliers to obtain the best prices for services.
- Work with Security Manager to inspect fire extinguishers annually for charge level, location, and ease of access.
- Work with Security Manager to inspect building alarm systems and perform monthly tests.
- Work with Security Manager to coordinate annual fire suppression system checks.
- Work with Security Manager to conduct necessary investigations as directed.
- Work with Security Manger to hold department meetings to assure proper communication throughout the department.
- Work with Security Manger to assure adequate seasonal, part-time, and full-time employees are available to fill requirements.
- Uphold all company policies as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures, Team Member Handbook, and Code of Business Conduct.
- Consistently exhibit an attitude of service inside and outside of the zoo, showing hospitality to all.

Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, the San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills/qualifications:
- Must have or be able to register as TxDPS Private Security Officer.
- Must be able to apply as an organization stakeholder with TXDPS.
- Bachelor’s degree with related coursework or work experience equivalent (at least 4yrs security-related experience)
- Two years of management experience (manager and above).
- Ability to handle, calmly and effectively, various types of public contact situations.
- Ability to contact appropriate emergency personnel to report an emergency requiring assistance, calmly, distinctly, and correctly.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office and ability to learn other software platforms.
- Certification as first aid, CPR, and AED provider; instructor certification is desirable.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Must be 18 years of age or older with a clean driving record for vehicle operation.
- Successful candidates must complete a pre-employment National Sex Offender Search, Criminal Background Check, and Drug Screen.
- We enjoy year-round operation for all staff, must be available day, nights, weekends, and occasional special after-hour assignments.
