Position Title: Associate Athletic Director, Media Relations

$108,750 to $125,000 (commensurate with experience)

Pay Frequency: Annual A. POSITION PURPOSE

The Associate Athletic Director for Media Relations is responsible all aspects of communication strategy both internally and externally to enhance the visibility and brand of Santa Clara Athletics. This position is the primary liaison to the University Office of Marketing and Communications and the School of Communication. As a member of the athletic department's senior management team, has a key role in advising and making recommendations to the department's executive staff in matters of department communications.

B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Program Direction and Development
Develop, direct and implement the media relations unit for the athletic department.
Direct supervision of staff that provides media relations for intercollegiate athletic programs in the areas content management for website, social and gameday media; event coverage; statistic and program historical content; media requests
Management and oversight of the Athletic Department website.
Management and oversight of the Athletic Department run social media sites.

Direct the Media Relations Unit.
Oversee three (3) full-time employees.
Manage the Media Relations budget.
Direct the department philosophy for story and content for graphic elements used in print, web, and other media.
Provide advice, consultation, and support in the development of policy, planning, and response to all media relations aspects of the Athletics Department.
Create relationships with local, regional, and national media contacts to further expand Athletic Department exposure.
Secure vendors and professionals for long-term relationships.
Contract Management

Oversight of the Department's official website.
Manage overall website layout and content including but not limited to: posting/updating team schedule, roster, student-athletes, and staff bios, updating historical record books, and general department information
Create intriguing feature stories to drive traffic to website.
Create new ideas to promote athletics via the Internet.

Direct all internal and external communications for assigned sports.
Independently, develop and manage a media relations strategy for assigned sports.
Develop and create content for our website and social media accounts, write previews/features, compile states and video clip content.
Provide and coordinate home event coverage and management functions including but not limited to: oversight of game statistics, home and visiting media.
Inform local media and national wire services of results of all University athletic events, at home and on the road.
Create and initiate feature story ideas about university athletes, teams, and coaches to local, regional and national media.
Promote and encourage coach and player interviews with members of local, regional and national media.
Create statistical and information databases for assigned athletic teams and individuals.
Maintain the history and records pages for the webpages of assigned sports.
Coordinates submission of appropriate NCAA and West Coast Conference Awards.
Administrative support for Department and University Awards/Events (ie: Hall of Fame) Direct social media efforts for assigned sports
Direct the strategic use social media to promote individual teams and Santa Clara Athletics.
Direct the activities of the Department's Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and other social media sites.
Collaborate with Marketing and Creative Services units to develop and execute a cohesive social media strategy.
Assist in creating content social media accounts.
Responsible for uploading individual, team and department digital content to secure storage for internal and external use.
Professional and industry development to improve maximizing social media. Direct the broadcasting for assigned sports.
Serve as the Broadcast liaison for assigned sports.
Coordinate with WCC network and third-party providers for home game streaming
Identify, hire and prepare home play-by-play and/or color commentary part-time/independent contractors.

Oversee athletic communication operations at athletic events for assigned sports.
Recruit, train, supervise and process payroll paperwork for game assistants and student workers for pressroom/box, press row, official scorekeeping, and statistical crews for assigned home athletic events.
Meet the needs of all media attending assigned home events.
Act as the department liaison for assigned sports with media for all events, home and on the road.

Supervise, direct and train on-call employees.
Recruit, train, supervise and process payroll paperwork for game assistants for assigned home athletic events.
Manage on-call employees' schedules in coverage of selected sports.
Encourage and motivate on-call employees to excel in their areas of expertise. Liaison responsibilities.
Serve as liaison to SCU's Office of Marketing and Communications (OMC). Work directly with OMC staff to maintain consistent public relations messages regarding SCU and its athletic program.
Serve as the Athletic Department's liaison to appropriate WCC, NCAA, and professional organization committees and events.
Serve as the Athletic Department's liaison to the School of Communications to create partnership opportunities.
Manage the relationships between all third-party relationships related to media relations. Other duties as assigned.
1. Be aware of and abide by all applicable NCAA and Conference rules and regulations.

C. PROVIDES WORK DIRECTION

Supervises and provides work direction to media relations department regular staff, student workers and game staff.

D. GENERAL GUIDELINES

Recommends initiatives and implements changes to improve quality and services. Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices. Maintains contact with customers and solicits feedback for improved services. Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools; planned training and performance initiatives. Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient workflow. Prepares progress reports; informs supervisor of project status; and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions. Prepares and submits reports as requested and required. Develops and implements guidelines to support the functions of the unit.

E. QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge
Advanced knowledge in publication and advanced media.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google Applications, social media platforms,
Experienced in AP-style writing and proficiency in layout and design software (Adobe Creative Suite) Adobe; knowledge of html is helpful.
Working knowledge of statistical software, i.e. Genius Sports, Stat Crew, Live Stats and Automated Scorebook.
Understanding and commitment to the University's vision for intercollegiate athletics.

Skills
Excellent writing and editing skills.
Demonstrated skills in oral and written communication.
Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
Proven organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects in a dynamic environment.

Abilities
Proven track record in oversight of collegiate or professional athletic media relations unit.
Experience with media relations or public relations for a high-profile team or unit.
Ability to serve as articulate spokesperson for the University with the media and other key external constituencies.
Willingness to work nights and weekends, travel with athletic programs.
Team-oriented individual with willingness to take initiative and be flexible. Education
​Bachelor's degree in communications or a related field required. Years of Experience
A minimum of five years of experience in a sports information/media relations capacity preferred.
