Description

Provides sterilized surgical instruments, supplies and equipment to the operating rooms. Assist in the training of the other personnel, utilizing principles of the standard precautions and utilizing principles of event-related sterility. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate patient care.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Promotes the mission, vision and values of the organization.
  • Decontaminates and sterilizes instruments, medical supplies and equipment; and assembles wraps and sterilizes trays of instruments.
  • Monitors biological and chemical wash solution to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment.
  • Sort mismatches set of instruments, trays and medical equipment and makes them available to sterile processing customers in a timely manner.
  • Restocks, labels and maintains inventory; submits requisitions; collects and distributes instruments, trays, crash carts and facility medical equipment.
  • Performs environmental maintenance duties and assists in maintaining inventory levels in sterile processing, the operating room and in equipment storage areas.
  • Verifies that equipment functions properly, requisitions for equipment maintenance, repair or replacement; and removes defective equipment.
  • Adheres to guidelines for infection control and maintains a safe, clean and orderly OR environment.
  • Assists the operative team with turnover between classes.
  • Assists with maintenance of supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains established Center and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with patients, families, visitors and other Center employees.
  • Documents concisely, precisely and accurately on all records or documents as indicated by policy.
  • Participates in quality assessment activities as directed for the continuous improvement of patient care and for the Center. Compliance with continuing and mandatory education programs.
  • Ability to respond quickly, physically and mentally when priorities and/or the patient’s condition changes.
  • Regular, physical attendance on a predictable basis is essential to the performance of this job.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and Center related business.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read and legibly write, communicate appropriately and effectively, understand and execute instructions as needed and visually distinguish color.
  • Ability to function as a member of the surgical team.
  • Ability to perform tasks of a scrub technician efficiently.
  • Compliance with continuing and mandatory education programs.
  • Knowledge of care and handling of surgical instruments.
  • Knowledge and ability to execute the aseptic technique.

Qualifications


Qualifications

 

  • Graduate of an accredited school of surgical technology or LVN license in state of employment.
  • Certified in sterile processing preferred (CSPDT) or in surgical technology (CST or CORT).
  • One (1) year experience preferred.

  • Working Conditions: Exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation and repetitive motions; Category 1-Occupational exposure.

 

  • Physical Demands: Physically demanding, high stress environment. Full range of body motion including crouching, stooping, reaching, bending, twisting, handling and lifting patients. Frequently lift, pull and push the weight of the average patient with assistance of one other person.

 

Manual and finger dexterity; hand eye coordination; standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Frequent lifting and carrying items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds. The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position. The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
