What you’ll do
API First at SAS is based on the premise that Developers are first class citizens, and deserve a first class experience. Our team, comprised of systems engineers and experience designers, is passionate about elevating well-designed APIs within the enterprise. As an API Architect with the API First Program at SAS, you will collaborate within the team and across all of SAS in the following areas

You will:
  • Curating, evolving, creating, and supporting API and developer program governance processes as well as API standards, guidelines, and best practices.
  • Advising cross-division teams in the architecture of software applications through consideration of business and market requirements, system quality attributes, and overall technical direction.
  • Researching and advising on new and emerging software technologies and partnering with appropriate teams to drive assessment and adoption.
  • Providing education and enablement tools to help product teams understand and interpret standards, guidelines, and best practices and apply these concepts within their own technical domains.
  • Advancing technical strategy for APIs in “as-a-service” and low code/no code landscapes
  • Participate in API design workshops and technical discussions
  • Work with product management to ensure changes are consistent with business objectives and customer requirements.
  • Manage risk identification and risk mitigation strategies associated with the architecture and design
  • Assist product teams with understanding tradeoffs and how to make responsible decisions related to architecture and design
  • Maintain and organize detailed documentation about technical designs with supporting justification for architectural and design choices.
  • Provide technical guidance on methodologies, frameworks, and best practices to developers to encourage the flow of information and promote understanding among product teams.
  • Develop reference architectures and/or sample applications to demonstrate standards in practice.

  • You have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
  • Experience with:
    • REST API standards, design patterns, and industry best practices
    • Docker, Kubernetes or other Microservices and cloud native architecture
    • API Management Solutions (Apigee, API Connect) and APIs as a Product
    • Developing and/or consuming HTTP APIs, especially REST.
    • Linux operating system, commands, and shell programming tools.
    • Scripting languages and automation techniques for testing and deployment.
    • Writing or leveraging OpenAPI (Swagger) 2.0 documentation.
    • Familiarity with OpenAPI 3.x.
    • Understanding of the API lifecycle and awareness of common existing tooling across that ecosystem
    • Understanding of DevOps principles and commonly used tooling in DevOps pipelines.

The nice to haves
  • Master’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Statistics, or related field.
  • Experience integrating / interacting with SAS programmatically through one or more types of APIs found on https://developer.sas.com/home.html.
  • Familiarity with usage and programming for cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure.
  • Understanding of RESTful API principles.
  • Experience with:
    • User and developer experience design (UX and DX).
    • Contributing to open source projects.
    • HTML, CSS, JavaScript
    • GraphQL
    • gRPC
    • API security concepts, testing and docuementation best practices

Other knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Professional software development experience.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies.
