What A Day in the Life of What an Educational Counselor Is Like
The Schuler Scholar Program is seeking an Educational Counselor (EC) who will provide guidance on a group and individual basis to Scholars at our partner school, North Chicago Community High School, located in North Chicago, IL. The EC holds the Scholar accountable to meeting Schuler’s high expectations, including leading honest, sometimes challenging conversations about academic progress and Scholarly behavior. The focus of the work is on academics and establishing trust with Scholars. While building these relationships, the EC gathers relevant information from Schuler staff and high school teachers and counselors to effectively guide the Scholar throughout his or her high school career. The EC is an advocate for Scholars and supports each Scholar’s identity and intellectual curiosity. The EC is part of a collaborative school-based team that includes a School Director, College Counselor and Scholar Coaches. The position is full time and year round. Bilingual, Spanish/English, highly preferred.
Primary:
Work one-on-one with Scholars in order to monitor academic performance and social/emotional well-being and direct them to appropriate resources, as needed
Manage Scholar withdrawal process for those that don’t meet Schuler requirements
Provide administrative support to and collaborate with the School Director
Collaborate with Schuler College Counselor
Mentor and support Schuler Scholar Coaches who provide one-on-one tutoring to Scholars
Plan and facilitate programs, including transition to high school workshops and other after school events as needed
Update the Scholar database on a regular basis
Secondary:
Collaborate with teachers and other school staff to support Scholars
Manage the four-year course planning process for Scholars, and advise on course selection consistent with the Schuler program requirements
Facilitate meetings and workshops for students and families
Participate in the Scholar recruitment process
Communicate and collaborate with other Educational Counselors from other Schuler school sites
Plan, implement, and participate in summer leadership camp
Occasional:
Utilize knowledge of Scholars to make recommendations and advocate on Scholars behalf
Monitor Scholar program attendance
