Your day.
As a Specialty Ambulatory Pharmacy Coordinator, you need to know how to:
- Assist with all phases of pharmacy services. Work with patients, providers, and insurance companies to obtain prior authorizations. Answer phones and notes from physicians in a timely manner. Accurately read, interpret and enter prescriptions in a timely manner. Route questionable prescriptions to the pharmacist for completion. Communicate with physicians and clinic staff for prescription clarification, substitutions and formulary changes as needed.
- Assist pharmacist by gathering clinical information on patients. Assist the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in providing pharmacy services to the patients of the assigned clinic, including: finding funding assistance for patient copays, assisting patients with completing required registration forms for pharmaceutical programs, reimbursement applications, and other forms as needed for their pharmaceutical care, and representing the pharmacy to the providers and provider clinic staff when the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist is unavailable.
- Meet with patients to review and process financial assistance applications. Ensure completeness, verify supporting documentation, and manage the eligibility determination process.
- Route prescriptions to the appropriate pharmacy for filling, emphasizing the clinical and patient service advantages of using SCL Health Pharmacy Services as the filling pharmacy.
- If appropriate, connect patient with medication adherence and synchronization programs to maximize the patient’s benefit derived from SCL Health Pharmacy Services.
- Assist patients in reviewing their current pharmacy benefits, and assist patients with open enrollment and future pharmacy benefit selection, based on their pharmaceutical needs.
- Provide patients with price quotes, coinsurance/cost sharing estimates, and coordinate payment for services with the dispensing pharmacy.
- Provide patients with a clear explanation of their pharmacy benefit, including reasoning behind coinsurance/cost-sharing. Answer questions related to coverage and billing.
- Provide pharmacy support to patients who are forced to use external pharmacies for their care, including helping patients troubleshoot issues with getting their prescriptions filled.
- Communicate benefit decision to physicians, physician's office staff, medical management staff and/or pharmacists.
- Research, resolve and document prior authorization outcomes in pharmacy system. Communicate selected prior authorization criteria, pharmacy benefit coverage and formulary alternatives to physicians, physician's office staff, medical management staff and/or pharmacists. Escalate requests to pharmacist when request requires extensive clinical review or denial. Research, resolve and document physician or client inquiries and grievances and provide verbal or written results to client, prescriber, provider and/or management.
- Participate in quality and patient safety initiatives. Identify potential areas for improvement including processes that could be streamlined or revised to improve patient satisfaction. Identify potential safety hazards that may create problems for patients and/or staff, and take appropriate actions. Maintain cleanliness of all assigned clinic working areas. Participate in departmental meetings, contributing ideas or feedback.
- Complete documentation according to departmental standards and navigate multiple pharmacy and EHR software programs.

- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Current Pharmacy Technician certification (CPhT) or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
- Current Licensed Pharmacy Technician
- Current CAC/CAAS certification or newly certified at next training opportunity
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience working as a certified pharmacy technician in a retail pharmacy setting
Preferred:
- Completion of a formal technician training program
- At least one (1) year of specialty pharmacy experience
