Summary

Under the general direction of the Director of Facilities Operations & Maintenance, this position provides leadership for Seattle University Facilities Services to help foster a positive safety culture at Seattle University that demonstrates care for self and others in how we conduct our work. This position develops, implements, and supports a comprehensive safety program to ensure that Facilities Services is in compliance with all federal, state, and local laws governing environmental and workplace safety.

Safety Program Development and Training – 40%


  • Serves as the safety and compliance officer for Facilities Services, including liaising with regulatory agencies such as the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries, Department of Ecology, Puget Sound Pollution Control Agency, and other authorities having jurisdiction over workplace safety and environmental compliance, when needed.
  • Prepares and maintains written safety programs and conducts presentations and trainings on safety in the workplace.
  • Programs that will be written, implemented, and maintained include but are not limited to: hazard communication, hazardous waste, contractor safety, respiratory protection, bloodborne pathogen, first aid, etc.
  • Implements a formal inspection program to address hazardous working conditions pre-emptively, including the development and implementation of job hazard analyses for Facilities employees.
  • Maintains documentation related to Facilities safety incidents and near misses, debriefs, and follow-up actions. Attends
  • Safety Incident Debriefs and follows up on assigned actions.
  • Reviews contractor site specific safety plans to ensure coordination and compliance with University requirements.
  • Monitors work in progress to identify deficiencies and corrective actions. Follow up to ensure completion.


Hazardous Materials Management – 25%


  • Maintains a campus-wide safety program for and oversees the use and disposal of hazardous materials to ensure compliance with hazardous material handling laws and regulations.
  • Review products being used to eliminate and minimize the overuse of hazardous materials. Research and recommend substitute materials of a non-hazardous nature.
  • Prepare written documentation and conduct appropriate training to ensure staff are aware of hazardous materials handling.
  • Coordinates and consults with Public Safety for response on all hazardous materials incidents.
  • Maintains recordkeeping information related to hazardous waste disposals and accumulation area inspections, in accordance with WAC 173-303.
  • Prepares and sends the annual dangerous waste report to the Department of Ecology and the Pollution Prevention Plan when required.


EHS Program Management – 20%


  • Serves as a subject matter expert on matters related to environmental and occupational safety.
  • Manages the Facilities EHS budget and supports procurement related to EHS purchasing, including hazardous material disposal and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Oversees and manages projects related to environmental health and safety (ex. lead and asbestos remediation, first aid kit installation), including but not limited to sample testing, third-party contractor selection and contracting, onsite project management, and closeout.
  • Manages web content by preparing, reviewing, updating, and editing technical outreach messaging using Terminal Four.
  • Evaluates new equipment for integrity and supplies safety equipment to staff, including PPE, as requested.


Environmental Quality and Compliance – 15%


  • Reviews existing University structures and sites for environmental quality including coordinating vendor testing of air, soil, and water quality.
  • Conducts site-specific assessments of environmental health conditions and develops solutions to identified deficiencies.
  • Collaborates with campus partners (e.g. Academic Safety Officer, Department of Public Safety, building managers, etc.) to promote a safe and healthy learning and work environment for the campus community.
  • Serves as the environmental compliance liaison with regulatory agencies governing environmental quality, as appropriate.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in a physical science, environmental health or policy, public health, or another safety-related field, and a minimum of four years of experience working with safety and compliance policy management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience necessary to fulfill the needs of this role.
  • This position must have certified 24-hour HAZWOPER training or successfully complete training within 3 months of hiring.
  • Strong oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to translate complex policy and operational procedure information into easy-to-understand, simple language by means of limited narrative, photographs, drawings, diagrams and charts and other outreach means for use by administrators, faculty, staff, students and regulatory agency representatives.
  • Must be able to lift fifty pounds and access a variety of workplace environments (laboratory and non-laboratory).
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office. Proficiency in the use of Terminal Four web content management platform preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively at multiple levels of the organization and with multiple project teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in environmental health, public health, a physical science, or related field.
  • Certification as ASP, CSP, CHMM, CIH, or a related certification

Compensation at a Glance:

Salary Range: $75,000 - $85,000

Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate’s gender or any other protected status.
