Loan Underwriter – Review and approval of daily volume of loans to ensure proper documentation is included. Must have the ability to work closely with technicians, underwriters, and management. Is expected to have a comprehensive knowledge of all Real Estate Lending department functions and procedures. Must be familiar with primary functions of all Loan Administration departments. May be called upon to train entry level employees.
Primary purpose:
- Provide front-line support to lending personnel on the interpretation of lending policies, guidelines, and procedures related to all Real Estate Lending products.
- Assume a leadership role and provide guidance to other employees within the department.
Job Duties:
- Comprehensive underwriting of HELOC files and Mortgage files.
- Document outstanding conditions to the loan processing team.
- Document closing stipulations to the loan closing team.
- Assist the Real Estate Team Leader maintaining procedures, manuals, checklists, and resources as delegated.
- Train and mentor other employees as needed.
- Assist branch personnel with real estate questions and concerns.
- Intermediate training/exposure to all Loan Origination Systems.
- Perform reviews and verifications of documents (credit reports, sales contracts, flood certificates, income documents, insurance documents, asset statements, appraisals, title reports, etc.).
- Willingness to assist in all areas of operation as needed.
- Accept other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Minimum of one (1) year in Mortgage Lending (Branch or Operations) or equivalent experience and at least six (6) months in current position (promotion or lateral).
- Four-year degree, CCUE certification, or Associate degree via the NC-CTP preferred.
- Must have completed the Lending Certification Courses and Exam.
- Basic understanding of MCC and FHLBA programs.
- Have basic knowledge of MAP program and SECU*RE as it relates to underwriting.
- Must meet department production and quality standards.
- Maintain knowledge of real estate lending products, policies, and guidelines.
- Maintain knowledge of secondary market guidelines (FNMA/FreddieMac).
- Meets compliance and regulatory standards in terms of loan processing and underwriting.
- Demonstrate the ability to perform comprehensive underwriting/review of both HELOC and First Mortgage files assigned by management to ensure documentation is obtained and verified in accordance with Credit Union policy and guidelines.
- Must be organized and detail oriented.
- Must possess highest level of integrity and objectivity.
- Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills, problem solving ability, and critical thinking skills.
- Must understand and be dedicated to the Credit Union philosophy and work ethic.
- Must be able to cooperate and collaborate with co-workers and others.
- Must adhere to the work schedule and attendance policies established by the Credit Union.
- Must be able to speak and write English fluently.

- Office setting with physical proximity to other employees. Some background noise from other employees, copy machine, and telephone.
- Possibility of remote/hybrid work.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to comprehend and carry out job demands.
- Job requires a substantial amount of sitting and viewing computer screen.
- Use hands and fingers to press keys on a computer keyboard to enter or retrieve information.
- Use hands and fingers to press telephone keypad and lift telephone receiver.
- Answer and operate a telephone.
- Lift up to 25 lbs.
