Status: Hourly, Seasonal
Reports to: Garden Manager

The Farm
The Farm supports the mission of Shaker Village by demonstrating the thoughtful stewardship of land and livestock through sustainable agriculture practices, and by partnering with the Trustees Table to champion the use of The Farm’s products for our guests dining experiences.

Summary of requirements:
The Garden Assistant will work with the Garden Manager, and other staff to complete a variety of operations on the farm and garden. The position will have a focus on daily garden chores, care, planting and harvest of organic gardens and orchard, but will be asked to perform a variety of tasks related to The Farm or events at Shaker Village. Suitable applicants will be interested in learning all aspects of diversified farming and be comfortable around large and small animals.
Specific Duties:
  • Daily farm chores including feeding and watering all animals, watering the greenhouse, and assist opening/closing the barn for Program Staff and guests.
  • Assist farm staff in garden work including planting, weeding, mulching, and harvesting.
  • Greenhouse work including soil prep, planting, thinning and watering.
  • Assist Program Staff in farm related programs when necessary (i.e. Poultry Parade)
  • Assist Farm Staff in care and rotation of farm animals including cattle, sheep, goats, horses and poultry around farm and paddocks if necessary.
  • Assist staff in light construction, plumbing, and miscellaneous repairs as needed.
  • Learn to use tillers and tractors efficiently.
  • Assist with other farm work, demonstrations and public education as needed
  • Role model teamwork and great guest service while interacting with the public in a friendly and engaging manner
  • Ensure work area and equipment are in safe and reliable working order
Qualifications/Standards of Performance
  • Willing to learn and work toward the mission statement of Shaker Village.
  • Experience or interest in gardening and/or diversified farming.
  • Strong communication skills. Impromptu conversation skills are essential in this position.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Responsibility and punctuality.
  • Ability to work solo or in groups effectively.
Physical Requirements:
  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms.
  • Perform physical activities such as bending, stooping, climbing and walking.
  • Frequently required to sit, stand and walk.
  • Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
Working Environment and Conditions:
  • Frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • Noise level is usually low.
  • This job requires working evenings and weekends.
  • Exposure to grass and hay.
  • Inherent risk of working with large animals.
