DESCRIPTION: The Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), Community Placement (CPP) Clinician performs work related to providing services to committed residents from the DJJ. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Deputy Director of Programs and includes:

  • Providing mental health services to residents placed in the care of the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center, including diagnostic assessment, individual, group and family counseling, crisis intervention and stabilization, case management and community support;
  • Working closely with SVJC staff and other community agencies to coordinate treatment services;
  • Adhering to confidentiality guidelines, protects the rights of clients and adheres to all DJJ and facility policies and procedures;
  • Providing diagnostic and assessment services to residents and their families;
  • Providing crisis stabilization and emergency services as needed;
  • Performing individual, group and family counseling;
  • Performing case management services and ensuring linkage to community treatment services;
  • Conducting intake interviews, evaluating treatment needs and developing treatment plans;
  • Ensuring that all residents are administered the MAYSI-2, either through direct administration or by the CPP Program Manager;
  • Attending clinical staff meetings and functions as an active member of the interdisciplinary team;
  • Participating in clinical and administrative supervision;
  • Working collaboratively with SVJC staff and other professional staff in order to coordinate services;
  • Meeting documentation requirements and maintaining records in accordance to DJJ and facility standards;
  • Performing other duties as assigned by SVJC Administrators.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of the principals and practices of individual, group and family psychotherapy, juvenile delinquency and the juvenile justice system.
  • Skills in diagnosis and assessment, crisis intervention, case management, psycho-therapeutic interventions with children and families and collaboration skills.
  • Requires skills in oral and written communication, community education, public speaking, supervisory skills and computer skills.
  • Requires knowledge of ethical standards that govern helping relationships; demonstrated good judgement and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to understand etiology and treatment of mental health disorders.
  • Ability to form working alliances with clients, family members and staff of outside agencies.
  • Ability to work with children and adolescents from many socioeconomic and educational backgrounds who are experiencing a wide variety of mental health problems.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Applicants should have an MSW and 2 years of postgraduate direct service delivery experience, or a master’s degree in psychology, sociology, or relevant behavioral science in which clinical experience is a program requirement. Preferred applicants will be licensed or licensed eligible.
  • Prefer experience working in a field with delinquent or maladjusted youth in a residential setting, or experience in the field of mental health or social work.
