Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP, a global Am Law 100 firm, seeks an Urban Planner to join its Real Estate, Land Use, and Environmental Practice Group in the firm’s New York office.
We are seeking an urban planner who is interested in private real estate development and the desire to learn in a fast-paced and professional environment. The ability to multitask and the judgment to prioritize projects and meet deadlines are both a must. Strong writing and communication skills are also required to work with attorneys, staff, clients, and government officials.
The ideal candidate will have completed a Master’s degree in Urban Planning or a related field with between 2 to 5 years of professional work experience in planning, zoning review, and development permitting in New York City. Direct experience working for municipal planning departments or other planning agencies is desirable. An interest in local and state politics and land use policy is also beneficial. The Land Use Planner will work with the firm’s land use attorneys, planners, and other staff representing the firm’s clients (developers, builders, property owners, investors, contractors, non-profits and public agencies) and guide them and their projects through the entitlement and regulatory process.
The Land Use Planner will assist with all aspects of the New York City development phase, including property acquisition and due diligence, preparation of entitlement applications, review of project design documents, land use policy analysis, and research and review of compliance documents related to the City Environmental Quality Review Act (CEQRA). Possible attendance at project and city meetings may be required.
Required Qualifications: Master’s Degree with 2-5 years of relevant professional experience. Ability and willingness to work overtime to meet client needs and deadlines. Long-term commitment to firm and its clients. Familiarity with local development regulations and entitlement process.
Education
Required: Master’s DegreeMajor (if applicable): Urban Planning or related field
Computer/Software KnowledgeRequired: Proficiency with most office computer applications, including: Word, Excel, Power Point. Proficiency with basic design programs, including: Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
