Responsibilities:
- Provides overall assistance in the classroom to support the teacher and/or work with an assigned student in a one-to-one relationship.
- Provides additional structure, supervision, and instruction to assist the teacher in achieving the goals and objectives of the student’s Individual Education Program (IEP).
- Instructs students according to prepared lesson plans and maintains orderly classroom learning environment when assigned as a Substitute Teacher.
- Provides educational support and behavior management; documents student progress; and serves as an escort to students during school or program activities.
Requirements:
- Must possess professional level of knowledge of education/child development - acquired by completing a bachelor's degree program and possessing or demonstrating eligibility for (through application within 60 days of employment) Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) certification in specific subject area in secondary education or Special Education at time of appointment and continually during tenure in position is preferred.
- Must possess general knowledge of normal human growth and development and possess professional competence in classroom management, behavioral controls, and intervention methods - typically acquired in three to six months of progressively more responsible work experience.
- Must possess substantial interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with students with special needs in order to gain their cooperation and help them make progress in the course work. Also, must relate effectively to persons in other professional disciplines to provide the necessary links in communication within the organization (up to 80% of work time).
- Must possess a relatively high level of analytical abilities sufficient to follow lesson plans that have been developed to support curricula, assess student abilities, and create an appropriate learning environment in the classroom. Must be able to use a variety of teaching approaches depending on student needs.
