Are you an energetic, detail-oriented project manager who is passionate about land conservation in far northern California? Siskiyou Land Trust is a successful, growing land conservation organization seeking a motivated and dynamic Conservation and Projects Manager to join our team. We’ve protected over 30,000 acres of forest lands, woodlands, agricultural lands, meadows, and open space since in Siskiyou County 1994.
SUMMARY OF POSITION
Conservation (80%) The Conservation and Projects Manager is responsible for managing land protection projects of the Siskiyou Land Trust (SLT). Tasks include assessing the conservation merits of identified properties, assisting with the negotiations and drafting of conservation easements and associated agreements, reviewing baseline documentation, conducting appropriate record-keeping, facilitating real estate transactions, supporting grant proposals for project funding, and managing other tasks essential to completing conservation easement transactions.
Additional tasks include acting as the liaison between staff and the SLT Board of Directors on the Acquisition Committee (evaluating and proposing potential conservation projects), stewardship support of SLT conservation properties and education and outreach activities related to our conservation work at Siskiyou Land Trust. The Conservation Projects Manager works closely with our existing Conservation Projects Manager, Grant and Administration Coordinator, and Executive Director to carry out conservation work. The position entails working with landowner conservation partners, conservation funding partners, community partners, volunteers, and other collaborators in ongoing land and water conservation efforts across the Siskiyou
County region. The Conservation & Projects Manager will represent the Siskiyou Land Trust in various public settings and participate in community engagement, stewardship activities and fundraising activities.
Employees will at times “wear different hats.” With a growing community based land trust comes times when this position may be asked to assist with general needs of the organization, including supporting our online or in-person events and efforts related to Land Trust Alliance
Accreditation.
The Conservation Projects Manager position reports to the Executive Director and generally does not supervise other staff. However, he/she may manage sub-contractors, partners, and volunteers.
Communications, Engagement and Events. The Conservation Project Manager will assist in the development of the communications, materials, events, and programs to cultivate and engage supporters and volunteers to powerfully contribute to our efforts to conserve the beauty, character, and diversity of significant lands in far northern California. The Conservation Projects Manager will assist in developing the relationships and programs for supporters and volunteers that are essential to maintaining a sustainable organization.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conservation
1. Assist in coordinating the successful completion of a suite of conservation easement projects involving forest headwaters and ag lands in Siskiyou County. Working with the
Executive Director, conduct project due diligence, draft and negotiate easements, and draft and review baseline documentation.
2. Manage and track conservation projects, including creating and maintaining records for each project.
3. Collaborate with conservation partners to pursue strategies and projects consistent with
SLT priorities.
4. Act as the liaison between staff and the SLT Board of Directors on the Acquisition
Committee (evaluating and proposing potential conservation projects).
5. Research and track changes and trends in conservation easements.
6. Draft correspondence, memoranda and reports for landowners, partners, committees, board, and follow up from site and monitoring visits.
7. Assist in the development of appropriate maps and GIS data.
8. Support annual monitoring of SLT conservation easements to ensure compliance of the stewardship program with Land Trust Standards and Practices and Accreditation requirements.
9. Participate in the communications efforts and community engagement related to conservation protection projects.
10. Provide general office support as needed.
Marketing Materials and Communications
1. Assist with organization communications materials that present our mission and the work of our organization in a way that inspires people to contribute and give in all the many ways that are essential to our mission: cash donations; volunteer time and energy; in-kind donations; grants and planned giving.
2. Write and edit articles to promote SLT’s events and projects, including contributing to the monthly eNews and website content.
3. Assist social media current and relevant as many times per day/week as needed and appropriate.
Event & Engagement Coordination
1. Coordinate and implement SLT’s events, including the annual webinar series of events, as well as special events planned throughout the year.
2. Coordinate event logistics, including committee meetings, registration and participant tracking, materials support, and program evaluations.
3. Coordinate and monitor event timelines and ensure deadlines are met.
4. Recruit, manage, and train volunteers for SLT events and programs.
5. In-person engagement of supporters and volunteers.
6. Represent SLT at public events.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. A bachelor’s degree preferred, in natural resources, real-estate law, land management or other field related to conservation.
2. A minimum of three years’ demonstrated experience managing complex projects, conservation real estate transactions, or relevant work experience.
3. Scientific knowledge of, and field experience with, the landscapes and natural resources of far northern California.
4. Curiosity for the natural world.
5. Proficiency with understanding maps, natural resource information, and other spatial data.
6. Demonstrated experience in record keeping and data management.
7. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with a wide variety of individuals, including landowners, partners, staff, board members, and volunteers.
8. Well organized and self-directed, with attention to detail and follow-through necessary for conservation real-estate transactions.
9. Proficiency with PC computer systems, Microsoft Office and GIS programs.
10. A demonstrated passion for conservation.
