We are hiring a Head of Legal for Canary, a late-stage venture-backed smart home startup with a global presence. We are headquartered in New York City. - Principals only. No recruiters please.
Canary is looking for an exceptional lawyer to join us as we look to rapidly scale our business and launch new products. Our Head of Legal will be a key member of our management team.
As Head of Legal, you will be a full-time lawyer joining our dynamic and growing company. You will work closely with members of our team, gaining hands-on exposure to all aspects of in-house legal work at a fast-growing startup.

What you’ll be up to:
- Provide corporate governance and legal secretary functions to our VC-backed board
- Support our corporate finance and M&A activities alongside outside counsel
- Draft and negotiate agreements with vendors, suppliers, and partners
- Manage our privacy programs including compliance with GDPR and US laws
- Support the product and engineering teams with product-related advice
- Oversee outside counsel expanding and maintaining our patent and trademark portfolio
- Supervise outside counsel for other specialty matters such as litigation
- Work with cross-disciplinary teams from Finance, Business Development, Operations, Communications, and advise on legal risk, structures, policies, and procedures
- Provide general legal support to our global business on an as-needed basis
What you'll bring:
- 5 years of experience at a law firm, in-house legal department, or a combination of the two, including significant transactional experience
- Meticulous and vigilant, with a keen attention to detail
- Willing to wear multiple hats and work on contracts of all types
- High-energy and enjoy working autonomously
- Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills
- Excited by start-up culture, workspace, and development
- Experience with startups is a bonus but not required
- Substantive expertise in corporate finance and tech transactions is also a plus
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build consensus across a global organization
