What are the responsibilities and job description for the Driller position at SME?

The Opportunity:

A Driller is responsible for a variety of field centric duties including mentoring the Assistant Driller, driving the drill rig or semi-truck and trailer, which requires Class A CDL with air brake endorsement (SME will assist you in obtaining your Class A CDL), maintaining the drill rigs, operating a drill rig to perform geotechnical borings from a few feet deep to more than 100 feet deep, troubleshooting equipment problems, and working with a Driller to complete assignments using various drilling and sampling techniques. Our ideal candidate will be able to complete the following responsibilities:

Responsibilities:

  • Drilling and Sampling: Perform subsurface exploration duties using conventional drilling techniques, which may include auger drilling, mud rotary drilling, and/or diamond bit coring techniques.
  • Detailed Reporting: Prepare detailed reports that encompass complex field observations, precise test results, and sophisticated analysis of construction processes.
  • Coordination: Coordinate work with drilling supervisors, engineers, geologists, project managers, and utility locating services.
  • Collaboration: Mentor the Assistant Driller work with traffic control subcontractors to SME when required for roadway work projects.
  • Safety: Promoting and adhering to safe work practices at all times for yourself, the assistant Driller and others while driving and working at project sites
  • Troubleshooting Expertise: Utilize your advanced problem-solving skills to identify and resolve complex construction challenges efficiently.
  • Technological Proficiency: Use construction technology tools and software to streamline data collection, reporting, and project management processes.
  • Training and Development: Take an active role in training and developing junior staff members, fostering their growth and expertise in the construction field.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay updated with the latest industry advancements, trends, and best practices to continuously enhance your skills and expertise.

  • Basic construction competencies including ability to determine location from surface features and landmarks by interpretation from surveys, road maps, aerial photos, topographic maps, and geologic maps; understanding construction stakes set by others, and color markings of utility companies.
  • Has a general aptitude for identifying and resolving complex technical problems in the field, utilizing critical thinking and logical reasoning.
  • Collaborative spirit to work effectively in a team environment, supporting colleagues, clients, and contributing to project goals.

  • Accurate and detailed record-keeping skills, documenting field observations, safety concerns, and problem resolutions.
