What are the responsibilities and job description for the Trials Coordinator position at Smith Gardens, Inc.?
Smith Gardens, the largest annual and perennial grower in the Pacific Northwest, has an exciting opportunity for a Trials Coordinator to join our team at our Marysville, WA site.
Opened in 1988, our Marysville location is the largest site of the Smith Gardens family consisting of 60 acres, with 500,000 square feet of greenhouse space. Marysville is the primary site for perennial production, but also grows mums, hanging baskets and annuals.
JOB FUNCTION:
Support the corporate sales and production teams by performing trials on new varieties and new product concepts and reporting the results to internal and external stakeholders. Coordinate planting and maintenance of large trial garden to showcase and evaluate plant performance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintain Excel spreadsheet of planned trials for the upcoming year and update as needed
- Plan and communicate upcoming tasks to site department leaders
- Check in plant materials and organize/prep for transplanting
- Track trials from young plant to finish stage using mobile app, documenting at regular intervals at key growing stages
- Work closely with site growing team to ensure trial plants are grown to quality standards
- Organize and oversee planting and maintenance of trial garden
- Assist with initiation and setup of research & development projects
- Compile reports of trial results in PowerPoint and communicate results with breeders and members of the corporate production and sales teams
- Provide courteous and professional customer service to trial visitors
- Assist with giving trial garden tours when needed
- Assist corporate production team with designated projects
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to organize workload and prioritize tasks
- Ability to work autonomously and to be self-motivated
- Strong communication skills
- Extreme attention to detail
- Comfortable working in different work environments (office, greenhouse, outdoors)
- Must be able to stand for long periods, bend/stoop, and lift up to 40lbs
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications – Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Teams
- Strong plant knowledge preferred
QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s or associate degree in Horticulture or related field of study
- 2-3 years of work experience in a greenhouse or nursery setting
- Technical growing background preferred
- Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus
