Responsibilities
- Installation and documentation of new and/or updated Inside and Outside Plant cable infrastructure to include conduit, cable trays, copper, coax, fiber and all associated elements.
- Follow codes, customer standards, and commercial best practice procedures (BISCI, EIA/TIA, ANSI) standards required for installation and testing of low voltage cabling and infrastructure.
- Analyze, administer, and maintain telecommunications and network cabling infrastructure. Must know the standard copper 568‐B Color code, 25 pair color code, and the Fiber 12 strand Color Code
- Responsible for tasks assigned to include Category 6 cabling and fiber optic cabling infrastructure. This includes Copper terminations on Patch Panels, Modular Plugs, Jacks as well as Fiber Splicing/Terminating single and multiple strand fiber optic cables. Dress, terminate, and test cables and components,
- Ability to troubleshoot.
- Test, locate, and repair cabling infrastructure associated with trouble calls, and performs routine maintenance.
- Well versed in the use of network cabling test equipment including network testers, copper cable testers, fiber OTDRs and fiber power meters. This includes setting up fiber testers with the appropriate test ends.
- Responsible for organizing, saving, and delivering test results as required by the project.
- Interpret and follow service orders, statement/scope of work, and manufacturer’s instructions.
- Interpret and follow circuit diagrams, floor plans, installation diagrams, and networking logic diagrams.
- Documents network by labeling and routing equipment and cables; recording configuration diagrams and specifications.
- Maintains current knowledge of relevant technologies as assigned.
- Participates in special projects as required.
- Identify, track, and remove abandoned cable, and keep cable neatly tied and bundled while maintaining safety standards.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- High School diploma, or the equivalent
- 3‐6 years of related telecommunications experience.
- Personal hand tools and basic test equipment for telecommunications work
- Must be familiar with National Electric Code, BICSI guidelines/standards, ANSI/TIA/EIA standards.
- Must have the ability to follow direction and communicate effectively with Team and customers.
- Must be able to complete physical work as indicated above under responsibilities.
- Must be able to provide problem analysis, problem solving, and demonstrate mechanical aptitude.
- Must have strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Must perform work in a workmanlike manner consistent with industry and SMS expectations and best practice.
- Must deliver strong customer service experience.
- Must present professional image to customers.
- Must be dependable and report to job on time.
- Able to report for work to varying worksite locations as required.
- Ability to work with hand tools, to include power tools, powder actuated tools, and ladders
- Ability to work well with others and communicate with supervisors and customers.
- Understand network topography.
- Needs to be computer literate. Ability to use Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word, input data into files and create and maintain cable records as jobs proceed and formalize at completion.
- Ability to walk long distances for long periods of time, capable of sitting and standing for long periods of time; freely bending, kneeling, crawling and stooping while working; work from high places such as roofs, ceilings, ladders and crawl spaces and other small areas.
- Capable of lifting of material up to 50 pounds, loading equipment onto carts or shelves, moving equipment to work locations, unloading equipment, mounting of equipment into racks and trash removal.
- Able to work in unconditioned spaces (no heating or cooling).
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
- Associates Degree in a related technical discipline
- BICSI Installer or Technician certification or equivalent
