Definition
This post describes the Assistant Manager position. Although this position is initially under general supervision during training, Assistant Managers are eventually expected to perform all necessary tasks to operate the business under little or no supervision.
Responsibilities
- Manage the business while the Manager is away, including preparing the register at the start of the day, organizing special orders, covering shifts, handling inspections, and a variety of other routine tasks
- Ensure the business runs smoothly; to that end, Assistant Managers may be responsible for trips to the bank, shopping trips, placing orders for delivery, covering shifts, etc.
- Exercise good independent judgment and problem-solving skills
- Train new team members
- Handle customer complaints
- Supervise team members and shift leads, ensuring that they follow OSHA and Health Code requirements as well as store policy
- Coordinate with and clearly communicate with management to ensure the needs of the business and team are adequately met
- Food preparation, customer service, and a variety of cleaning tasks, including dishwashing
Qualifications
Applicants should:
- Be fully available to work any shift any day of the week. Shifts are scheduled Monday through Saturday from 7 AM to 10 PM
- Be willing and able to work full time (due to the size and nature of the business, full time is considered at least 30 hours per week)
- Be willing and able to cover shifts and be able to be flexible with their schedules to meet the changing needs of the business and team
- Be able to follow oral and written instructions and request clarification as needed
- Have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license
- Be able to lift at least 50 lbs safely

Applicants should have the following education or experience:
- At least 1 year of experience in a supervisory or management role, though this requirement may be satisfied with relevant post-secondary education
- At a minimum, have a high school diploma or GED
- At a minimum, be certified at the Food Handler level to work in food service in the state of California
Compensation
Rate of pay:
For this position, the lowest pay on the pay scale is $16.50 per hour (plus tips). Starting pay is negotiable and is primarily based on applicants’ level of relevant prior experience, degree of availability to work and cover shifts, and relevant education. Pay increases within the bounds of the pay scale as employees in good standing stay on with the business in the long term and receive training to handle higher levels of responsibility.
