What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Technician I- in VA position at SoBran, Inc.?
*All employees are expected to perform their duties as assigned, arrive at work at 7:30am and depart at 4:00pm M-F. You will be required to work on the weekends as scheduled. The weekend hours are from 7:30am-12:30pm.
This person is expected to be familiar with the day-to-day activities, personnel and issues within the facilities. We expect the Veterinary Technician to be forward-thinking and create and assist in developing plans to enhance the learning abilities and performance of the staff working on this contract. The Veterinary Technician will assist the Program Management in the efficient allocation of the budget and develop and maintain an effective relationship with the EVMS staff.
PRIMARY DUTIES MAY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
- Performs daily animal health checks and reports any abnormal animal conditions to the Attending Veterinarian and/or Asst./Facility Manager and/or the Project/Program Manager.
- Assists the veterinarian with examinations and procedures. Alerts the veterinarian of emergencies or animal problems within one hour of discovery.
- Communicate regularly with the Facility Manager and Attending Veterinarian regarding management of active medical cases including, but not limited to, medical procedures, nutrition, training, and behavioral enrichment.
- Develop and maintain an effective relationship with all staff.
- Calculates drug dosages and provides treatments as directed.
- Monitors the health status of animals daily, identifies and communicates signs of abnormal or poor health.
- Operates and maintains equipment such as mechanical ventilators, anesthesia equipment, ECG, and x-ray.
- Provides pre, intra, and post-operative monitoring of animals.
- Maintains medical records accurately and files all closed records.
- Assists veterinarian, PI or Study Director with surgical procedures.
- Collects, preserves and prepares any biological samples such as; tissue, blood, urine, fecal samples and/or skin scrapings.
- Maintains surgical and necropsy schedule.
- Maintains surgical and necropsy rooms in accordance with SOPs.
- Ensuring hospital area meets regulatory standards in accordance with DEA, USDA, and OSHA.
- Maintains inventory of all drugs and medical supplies, keeping all areas properly stocked at all times.
- Maintains inventory of laboratory gases. Ensures that the tanks are secure, and the system is operational.
- Maintains controlled substances and log. Checks log monthly and reports any problems within 24 hours to the DEA license holder and provides a quarterly report to the DEA license holder.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- A.A. in Veterinary Technology or B.S. in Biology, Animal Science or related discipline and LAT certification or LVT, CVT, or equivalent training or experience preferred.
- After hire must complete training for Research Technician.
- Understands and follow all SOP's and Quality Assurance Standards a must.
- Strong communications (reading, writing, and speaking) and interpersonal skills required.
- Team player and able to develop and maintain good working relationships. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to lift a maximum of 50 lbs.; bend, push, pull, stoop, climb and stand for a prolonged period.
