Location: We are seeking a Accounting/Vault Assistant for our Washington State Ferries in Bremerton.
Washington State Ferries operates the largest ferry system in the United States. Twenty-two ferries cross Puget Sound and its inland waterways, carrying more than 22 million passengers to 20 different ports of call. From Tacoma, Washington, to Sidney, British Columbia, we travel up and down the Sound, acting as a marine highway for commercial users, tourists, and daily commuters alike. The fleet is a major tourist attraction and icon of Washington state.
Principal Functions:
The Accounting/Vault Assistant is an entry level accounting position which requires strong numbers orientation, problem-solving skills, research skills, computer skills and attention to detail.
The Accounting/Vault Assistant is responsible for providing accounting support to the Assistant Controller or other management personnel within the business unit. They will perform a variety of operational, accounting, and payroll functions in support of internal customer service and the safe, accurate and efficient management of the unit’s cash assets. The Accounting/Vault Assistant will be responsible for the daily entry and weekly processing of all Accounts Payable invoices. This role will also provide support to the Payroll Administrator with payroll functions to maintain the confidence of the units’ employees by following the payroll processing procedures. Additionally, they will also work with the financial team to meet financial deadlines by accurately entering financial data as required and be trained as backup for the vault room; sort and count cash, will deliver and retrieve cashier banks, will prepare vault drops and will post transactions to appropriate accounts, as directed by the Unit Assistant Controller and Payroll Administrator.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Support the Accounting function and maximize Sodexo Live!’s revenue and operational excellence through performance of varied accounting tasks and duties.
- Ensure quality and safety standards are maintained.
- Record payroll data efficiently and accurately to maintain employee confidence.
- Process financial data competently and precisely to assist in meeting financial deadlines.
- Fills orders for currency and coins, and counts and records cash deposits: Counts currency, coins, and checks received for deposit in the vault from cashiers on the ferry galleys, by hand and/or by using currency-counting machines.
- Totals currency and checks, using computer or calculator, to verify amount on the deposit slip, spreadsheet, or form.
- Contribute to goal of making Sodexo Live! #1 in Event Hospitality and the #1 Employer of Choice through personal commitment and leading by example.
Qualifications/Skills:
- High school diploma, some college and/or appropriate combination of education and work experience to support on-the-job effectiveness.
- Six months of previous experience or exposure to accounting principles and procedures.
- Ability to work independently, exercising appropriate skills for effective judgment, creative problem solving and taking initiative.
- Excellent communication skills, with ability to deliver and interpret information across various sources.
- Payroll experience a plus.
- Attention to detail is essential.
- Ability to learn various systems and processes.
- Strong team orientation and ability to work with a variety of departments to accomplish assigned tasks.
- Numbers orientation, with ability to accurately compute various mathematical equations.
- Ability to utilize a calculator and change counter machines.
- Ability to manually count and accurately make change for transactions involving large sums of money.
- Ability to work well in a high stress, fast paced environment.
- Exceptional computer literacy with Microsoft Office Suite software.
Other Requirements:
- Scheduling flexibility to meet operational needs, which can include nights, weekends, and Holidays.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds in weight.
