General Function and Scope:

Support the Product Development laboratory, Sample Department, and Regulatory Affairs at the Greensboro, NC manufacturing site. Product Development, Sample Department, and Regulatory Affairs provides laboratory and technical support for Production, Quality Control, and Sales.

Description:

1. Department: Product Development - Greensboro, NC

2. Supervisor: Quality Control Supervisor

3. Job Duties: See below

Principal Duties:

1. Conduct independent laboratory-scale projects involving development of new and current products.

2. Assist Manufacturing in the identification and/or resolution of problems involving product manufacturing processes and quality issues

3. Determine effectiveness of products and implement projects for continuous improvements.

4. Develop and implement new laboratory test methods for the testing and application of products.

5. Interface with appropriate departments to get product development related problems resolved.

6. Perform laboratory scale application testing on existing products.

7. Analyze and test competitive samples, as necessary.

8. Assist Production in full-scale trials of new and current products for three manufacturing plants.

9. Maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting of analytical instruments

10. Track instrument issues

11. Planning/budgeting for new equipment

12. Development of new and optimization of existing analytical methods

13. Provide analytical support during new products introduction

14. Provide training to Quality Control Lab Techs on newly implemented QC procedures, initiation of Management of Change (MOC)

15. Development of new SOPs and revision/ update to existing SOPs

16. Coordinate vendor contract for instruments service agreement

17. Support SAP aspect of QC and Sample Department data entry and assistance in resolving any QC and 18. Sample Department data issues (material movement, shelf-life extensions)

19. Coordinate third party and internal quality system audits, including customer audits, to document compliance with ISO 9001:2015, FSMA, NSF, Halal, and Kosher

20. Supporting and managing requests from external and internal teams

21. Assist in supplying the lab with laboratory consumables, supplies, and chemicals

22. Addressing any maintenance issues as they arise in the laboratory areas by creating work orders and following up with the maintenance department

23. Aiding in customer complaints investigations

24. Assist in managing sample retains inventory

25. Responsible for managing any product consistencies (shelf-life stability)

26. Provide relevant and timely analytical support on a seven-day, 24-hour basis

27. Assist for the maintenance, calibration, and operation of all instruments used on site for analyses including Shimadzu HPLC’s, Refractometers, Viscometers, Balances, & Moisture Balances

28. Assist in providing support for local Sample Department

29. Other duties as assigned by management

30. Adhere to all aspects of Responsible Care®.

Additional Duties:

1. Order laboratory equipment and maintain laboratory inventory.

2. Assist in the maintenance of laboratory organization, cleanliness, and safety.

3. May be responsible for calibrations, documentation, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

4. Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) of laboratory chemicals.

5. Participate in safety, RC14001, ISO, NSF, FSMA, Halal, and Kosher related activities.

6. Keep up with job specific areas by attending any technical, applied classes, symposiums.

Shipping samples (one liter or less) via DOT and IATA regulations.

8. Perform other duties and assist other employees with tasks as assigned by Management.


Education - The job requires a minimum Bachelor of Science degree in either Chemistry, Biology or another related science. A person with a higher education may reduce the experience requirements listed below. Experience in other areas of technology such as Chemical Engineering may be considered.

Experience - A minimum of 5 year laboratory experience and/or computer skills is required. Experience in synthesis of water soluble polymers and water in oil emulsions is desired. A person with the above qualifications would take approximately 12 months to become proficient. Prefer >1 years ISO, NSF, FSMA, Halal, and/or Kosher Management Representative. High degree of analytical thinking and flexibility. Must be capable of working with limited supervision and under a fast-paced environment

Physical Demands - Work load may require extra hours. Work must be exact, requiring mental/visual attention for setting up, conducting and observing tests. Job may require up to 30% travel when necessary. Technical writing skills are a requirement.

Mental/ Visual Demands - Normal / corrected vision and hearing.

Working Conditions - Controlled laboratory environment, surrounded by hazardous chemicals, where personal protective equipment will be required during various laboratory procedures. May also require some work in some hazardous chemical process areas where appropriate personal protective equipment will also be necessary.

This position may require exposure to hazardous chemicals and/or waste. Appropriate training in compliance with federal law regarding hazardous waste exposure/handling will be completed within 6 months of hire to fulfill job requirements.

Complexity of duties - Must be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

Confidential Data - Access to raw materials and product costs as necessary.

Supervision Received - Limited supervision. Must be able to work and make decisions independently.

Contact with others - Normal contact with others within the company, as well as external customers.

Special Skills/Training - Good organization and computer skills required.
