JOB SUMMARY
The Cataloging Specialist will be responsible for maintaining optimal accessibility to the library
collection through the on-line catalog and properly processed materials. They will be the library
liaison for various statewide functions including inter-library loan. The Specialist will also carry
out routine Circulation Desk duties, a nd be welcoming to all Library visitors, assisting patrons of all ages in locating Library materials.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Classifies, catalogs and processes all library materials
  • Maintains an accurate, up-to-date database (catalog) of library holdings to provide
optimal patron access to the library collection
  • Coordinates library volunteers and supervises volunteers in processing and maintaining
the collection
  • Manages effective, cost efficient and timely inter-library loan services
  • Oversees participation in the ILL courier system and in the KitKeeper book set system
  • Assists patrons in the use of library computers and patron devices
  • Acts as liaison with state-wide services, such as inter-library loan, courier service and
Libby
  • May select for a portion of the Adult Collection
  • Performs routine circulation and processing functions as needed, including answering the
telephone
  • Enforces library policies and procedures in an appropriate manner
  • Performs other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in bibliographic maintenance standards and
practice, the Dewey decimal system, OCLC/MARC records and library automation

  • Providing excellent customer service to the public and co-workers
  • Expertise and proficiency with computers and devices, popular Library software, internet
and digital communications
  • Ability to learn library procedures and apply policies
  • Works with a high degree of accuracy, efficiency, dependability and independence
EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree with two years of library experience; education in library-related field
or Vermont Library Certification preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Internal - Work is normally performed in a climate controlled office environment, where
exposure to conditions of extreme heat/cold, poor ventilation, fumes and gases is very
limited. Noise level fluctuates and includes sounds of children, teens, families and
normal office equipment (computers, telephones, etc.). No known environmental
hazards are encountered in normal performance of job duties. Work involves
interaction and addressing behavioral issues with members of the general public who
may be unruly or impolite. Work occasionally involves exposure to safety concerns
typically associated with dealing with or addressing members of the general public in a
community setting.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Work involves standing and walking for brief periods of time. There is potential for eye
strain from reading detailed materials and computer screens. Exerts some physical effort
in performing duties including standing, bending, kneeling, reaching, carrying, pushing
and lifting up to 40 lbs. Work normally requires finger dexterity and eye-hand
coordination to operate computer keyboards at a moderate skill level. Repetitive motion
injuries may occur.
